Actually the Ford Essex V-6 was an option in 1982 and dropped mid year 1983.
Right-o.
I wasn't quite finished with the post (as usual) and since have added the V6 info. I was lookin' for the exact intro date, but all I could find was sometime in model year 1982. The part number prefixes are mostly E2DZ = 1982 Granada, what the engine was first used in.
When those 3.8's reach roughly 80,000 miles it's time for new timing gears, and if you don't keep anti-freeze in them, you can kiss the paper thin timing cover good bye. Those covers had a list price of $250.00 in the 1980's!

Those engines really made it to 80,000 miles?? The three 3.8 V6 trucks I knew of back in the 80's gave the 5.7 olds diesels a run for their money when it came to being a pile!
swiss cheese frames suck, they collaspe under the cab so in a wreck the bed is stronger than the cab, the cab gets crushed forward, seat folds up and you can be pinned inbetween the seat and steering wheel. ill never in my life drive one no matter if it is 10 foot drive.
ok last night i posted somthing and this guy didnt believe me that i had a 1979 Ranger Lariat SUPERCAB trailer special i dont have a digital camera and the only thing that still has lariat on it is my glove compartment so i took that off and scanned it i also scanned my vin number so maybe some one could tell me if im right or wrong. the truck had a 460 in it but it wasnt 4x4

WOW! Thanks yall for posting about the f100's in this thread. I really didnt know alot about this model. BUT i am interested in picking up a "new" truck so thats why i posted it.
and i wanted to make sure that this thing is FULL SIZE lol no compact stuff
its a southern truck..
1974 F-100 (custom explorer)
4x2
8 foot bed
302 v8 engine
80,000 original miles
For 3,500 bucks.
The body is in good shape, no dents and only minor rusting around wheel wells.
BUT i think it needs a tune up cause it stalled on me at about every stop sign. dont know whats up with that...
$3500 sounds a bit strong for a 2wd with rust, and needing a tune-up, just my opinion. Also, the 302 is a good engine, but it didn't come in the 1974 model. They came in the later 70's.
You know I'm not the smartest person around but I bet you could bank on the fact that the 302 was an option in the F100/150 from 1969-1996 including the 1974 F100 yeah I know F150 started around 1975 and the F100 was killed around 1983 The ranger lariat came out in 1978 it was the predecessor to the 1976-77 ranger xlt luxurious edition not a whole lot of these around.

The only F100s I had looked at in the early 80s (Had to be a 4x4) all had only a 6 or a 302 and only a 2 speed transfer case 2 wheel or 4 wheel, no 4 low so I got a 77 F150
