I have a 1999 superduty and am experiencing startup problems in the cold. I have not had the glow plugs working since fall and i was told by a local mechanic to turn the key on and if the dome light did not dim that it was the relay. i replaced the relay and still have no glow plugs. i am looking for problems but cannot find any. could someone point me in the right direction and tell me something to help? What color is the wire that goes from the dash to the relay, i am wondering if i even have 12V at the relay but dont wanna test till i know what wire it is, i dont wanna blow my tester. i have a good circuit from the battery to the relay so i know its not the 4 gauge wire thats bad, i believe its the "jumper" wire that comes from the ignition. any and all help would be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance
I assume you have tested the relay and are 100% positive it is working. If not, take a test light and touch one of the large poles. one will be hot and the other not. then turn the key on and test again, they should both be hot. if that is ok, then the next step is to OHM out the glow plugs. do a search and you will find detailed instructions. I doubt the "dome light" theory, because mine does not do this. But the volt gauge sure lets me know when they are on, and so does the LED.
How are you sure you havent used your glow plugs since fall? They come on almost every time you turn the key on. Also, on the relay you just changed, there is another large post. When you turn the key on, the other side should have power on it. One side always does, (battery side, and i think you found that) Just check the otherside after you turn the key on, and it should have power on it. Let us know from there.
i do have power on both sides, and i have not used them since fall because the truck started fine if i just cranked on it without letting the plugs cycle. but when i did use them last winter they worked phenominally, and i find it hard to believe they went so bad i cannot start under 30 without ether or block heater in 6 months. i also cannot believe it because i only put on 1900 miles all year. they went from great to completely shot that quick... hard to believe
