Shocks

Hi all I need to replace front shocks on my 04 250sdKR.

What should I use?
What should I expect to spend?
Can anyone tell me how to go about doing the job. I have worked on all the trucks I ever had but never had to change shocks, any help is greatly appreciated...

Thanks, Scott

No big deal. Pull the wheel off, unbolt old shock. Bolt on new shock. You might have to give the them a shot with penetrating oil first. I changed mine at 75k kilos. I went with Procomp MX9000's, about $240 for all 4. A lot of guys like the Bilsteins. Most agree that the oem shocks are crap anyway.

You will need to jack the axal up to get the tire off.

You don't even have to take the tire off if you don't want, but it makes a lot easier to change the shock.

I read somewhere that you might need a strut compression tool is this true? If so where do I get one?

No need for strut compression tool. You can collapse the shocks with your hands.

I didn't need anything. I just turned my tire full turn and unbolted the old one and put in the new one. Rinse & repeat. The rear ones are a joke; they take 5 min tops.

LoL looks like 96 beat me to it

I put bilsteins on my 03. Cost $240 for the set of four. I changed all four without jacking up the truck at all. I even did the fronts with the tires on. Took me about a hour to do all four from start to finish.

don't mean to hijack this thread but had a shock question also. I have a 04 PDS with the factory rancho shocks. I'm looking to replace them with Bilstein 5100's but when I put in my vehicle info is refers me to a Bilstein HD series. Front Model # F4-BE5-2818-HO. It stated the 5100's are for lifted vehicle. is this correct?

Yes, that is correct. You will use HD's if stock suspension, and use 5100's if lifted suspension.

I have a leveling kit and the 5100's and they were well worth it. By what others have said on this site the HD's are pretty good too.

Correct go with the HDs in your case.

The Blisten HDs are good shocks. I put them on and noticed the difference right away but my truck still had the original factory shocks.

Like others have said make sure to spray them with a good amount of penetration oil (PB Blaster, etc). You should be able to get everything off and on with hand tools.

I had a problem with my front lower bolts. They were seized to the point I twisted them both off but I don't think you'll be likely to run into that problem.

Here are the torque spec just in case you needed them.

Front upper mounting bolts: 76 ft-lbs
Front lower mounting bolts: 76 ft-lbs
Rear upper mounting bolts: 46 ft-lbs
99-04 rear lower mounting bolts: 46 ft-lbs
05 + rear lower mounting bolts: 66 ft-lbs

Check out www.rockauto.com. We've got Monroe Reflex truck shocks starting at only $41. We also stock many other brands like KYB and genuine Motorcraft parts.

Thanks for looking,
