87 Ranger Questions

Might be looking at a 87 Ranger with 2.9 L engine that they say needs a clutch. Don't know anything about the 2.9 engine so any tips about them would be appreciated. As for the clutch how much of a problem is it to change on this model (5spd)?

All trucks that old will have it's share of normal problems. Suspension wear, steering play, cooling, electrical, etc.

If the truck is in the 500-1000 dollar range buy it.
The clutches on these trucks are simple and most shops can handle the repair for around 500-800 dollars (probably more than the value of the truck ).

Make sure all clutch related parts are changed (inside the bell/clutchhousing).

The beauty of these trucks are the small size of the drivetrain, so a driveway fix maybe one you can handle yourself (and a friend of course).

The 2.9 is a good engine, however they have been known to crack heads.

Wendell's on the right track, pull the dipstick and check for milky oil, and run with the radiator cap off to see if it pukes water when cold. Also give it a good listen both hot and cold, a little cold lifter noise is normal, if you hear anything louder than the injectors ticking when it's warm pass it up. If it passes those two tests, and there isn't a cloud of smoke trailing you on your test drive, get it! Clutches are pretty cheap, you can do it for $300 if you can do it yourself, a good weekend project for you and a buddy. Worst case scenario, if you can find a doner in a scrap yard, parts are dirt cheap, that's always an out.

my dad gave me his old 87 Ranger 2.9, so when I get my lisence, I can relatively cheap first car. It sat for about 4 years, this year, still with the super old gas in it, fired right up.

The 2.9 is so easy to work on, there is actually more room with the V6 the I4. Mine needed the injectors cleaned, spark wires, plugs , new starter, new spark coil, and a fuel pressure regulator. All were very very easy to fix. You can pretty much get any part you want off and replaced in under an hour. I still have to do the clutch, (which my neighbor is goign to help me with, since hes got a car lift), but if looks like if you had some jack stands, you could do it in your driveway if needed.

If you're looking for a clutch kit, check out the ones we carry, you may find a good deal:

We've also got a lot more of the basic parts that may need replacing on a 20 year old vehicle.

Thanks for looking,
Justin
