Shenanigans??? Well, if you say so... I've been to the BJ auction and a few of the other big name ones. When you win the auction your proceed to the office and pay for it.... No shenanigans. All your paperwork has to be filed before you even get a bidders number. These folks don't run them like some repo auction in Hometown, USA. They have been scrutinized and investigated by every one who is anyone in the world of finance and all transactions are on the up an up..... When you sell a car at these auctions, you receive your check the next day..... Don't know what auctions you are referring to with all the under the table deals, but it sure as heck isn't this one!!!!!!
Dave, individual buyers have to pay for the cars on the spot, but not the classic cars dealers...especially those that are "in bed" with the auction companies. Ppl whose cars have been bought by dealers may wait up to three months...or more to get their money.

I've been in the old car hobby since the 1950's and have owned over 300 cars...over 80 Ford products alone and over 60 Packards. I also worked part time for one of the most prestigious classic car dealers on the west coast in the 1970's. The company and the big cheese auction company they were allied with, pulled off all sorts of crappola.

I know the score, so I ain't no newbie. I've attended dozens of mega-auctions...what I call circuses. You may not think cars are shilled, but I know that many are. The same thing occurs at all the collector auctions today, whether it's Pueblo Pottery, Winchester & Colt firearms, objects d'art...you name it.

Caveat emptor = let the buyer beware.

Whoo hoo, Yall see that 1970 Mustang Boss 302 (lot 732) go for $105,000.00 last night. Cost about $4,000.00 new.

A $325,000.00 1996 Bently only brought $86,000.00.

Ya gotta love it.

LOL...."if the Parts Man sez....."

Uh huh...Where's that box you want to catagorize me in?

This partsman is a member of the Society of Automobile Historians (for over 30 years), and is a collector of classic cars...mostly 1930's Packards.

This partsman has written over 3000 magazine articles since the 1970's for car club publications, Motor Trend, Car Life and Hot Rod.

This partsman has been a member of CCCA since 1966, both Packard Clubs since 1967.

This partsman belongs to MENSA, are you a member?

This partsman has a MA...how many other partsmen do you know that have one?

How many partsmen do you know that have over 2000 books on automotive history? Over 30,000 books on American history?

This partsman is also a life member of the NRA, and both Winchester Collector clubs, and is one of the acknowledged authorities on the Winchester Model 1895.

Somehow, this partsman finds the time to write articles on firearms for various gun collector publications.

This partsman is also a travel agent and writer, and a member of ASTA.

This partsman is a long time member of the Naval Institute, and is a military historian.

This partsman is an arrogant, egotistical, grouchy old SOB, and proud of it!

This partsman made wise investments, and has been retired since 1997.

I chose to become a partsman, but that doesn't mean I'm a no nothing dunce.

I've been in the car hobby since 1956, my family were GM dealers for 80 years, so I grew up in the carbiz. I know how dealers operate.

I worked for a long time classic car dealer, who was tied to a major auction company...there I saw how these circuses work.

Shilling is a way of life with these ppl. hoping to trap the unwary.

Well heck, then you must be right!!!! Barrett Jackson is nothing but a scam.... I'll never buy or sell another car there... Hope you let the other thousands of bidders now what a rip off it is.....

Heck, all I have is a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering, disabled due to injuries suffered while in military service since 1970, and still ran my own shop building Hot Rods and race cars for better then 30 years....

Yup, you have all the answers....

PS---now what do I do with all these cars I have laying around????? Guess I'll just give up on the 5 currently under construction, too.... Geez, anybody want em?? No reason to finish any of them and put them up for sale and live on money from these ill gotten gains!!!!!!!!

Guess I'll just go sit in my rocker and complain about everything!!!!! I guess it's much better to sit around, pat myself on the back, count my money and recite memories then to be out there making them.....

Shame on me.....

I never said Barret-Jackson is a scam...I did say these auction companies shill some vehicles. The method of payment to sellers varies.

I don't have all the answers and never will.

Ppl just love to catagorize others...putting them in a box with the rest, just because of their profession. They think because someone did a blue collar job, they are beer guzzling no nothings.

I'm also disabled...and personally I could care less about what other ppl think.

If I wasn't disabled, I could spend more time with my wife, a P.E., travelling the world, and wouldn't spend one second on any internet site.

There are far better things to do in life, besides spending my time playing with automobiles.

Well, that's just another one of your opinions, and your certainly entitled to it!!!!! I personally can't think of one single thing I would rather be doing then be out in the shop working on cars, or in my office at the drafting table planning the build of current and future projects!!!!!

To me, Hot Rodding, be it old trucks or one off creations is far more then a hobby, it's a way of life. I'm proud to say I've lived my life that way for the last 40+ years and if I had it all to do over I wouldn't change a thing!!!!

I'm as blue collar as they get, never had any desire to be anything else... As an engineer and a Hot Rodder, I have never seen any car or component on it that couldn't be improved, altered, changed, or otherwise modified to be something other then what some designer in some automotive studio thought I wanted.

I do appreciate your accomplishments, but we all have our own achievements that we may or may not choose to recite for others..... I choose to not play the silly game of "hey, look at me" but would rather have my work speak for itself. Nor would I pretend to have definitive solutions to every aspect of an automotive build, project, or problem. What I do have is an inquisitive nature that allows me to look at stock parts as nothing more then something that can be improved upon to offer better performance, safety, or longevity.

Anyway, we'd be far better off to just agree to disagree. My experience with the B/J auctions over the years (I was buying and selling there long before it became an annual event on the tube) has always been most pleasant and always top of the list on integrity. If your experience with this same company has left you with a different impression, so be it. Personally, I will keep it at as my favorite choice of events to participate in!!!!!

Fellas - we're talk'n pickups here. Fix'em up, put your son in the passenger seat and drive to town. Watch the wonder on his face when he hits the widow crank and figures out why "roll" fits into the phrase "roll down a window". That's priceless.

Hey Bill,
Shot my first buck with a Winchester 32, 1895 with an octagon barrel. My dad bought as a kid for $12 bucks.

my money

Like my old boss once told me: Its my money and I'll spend it on any dang thing I want to! The amount of money anyone spends on any particular item is relative to what he's worth. There is people in this world that wouldnt bend over to pick up a $100 bill, but I have to work a few hours to get it. It all boils down to: how bad do you want it? Has anyone ever seen the TV show about the diamond industry? For people to pay $5-10,000 (or more) for a little shiny rock is nuts to me. But they have PR'd it to get where they are. Any then they only mine so many stones a yr, so the market doesnt get soft. Plenty of people out there ready to take your dollars, if you're foolish enough to give it to them. Witness the housing market a few yrs ago, when people were paying more for a house than they were listed for, and now they are begging the gov for monetary help. Jeez, guess I'll just have a beer and take a nap.
