i have a 66 with a 352 engine and 4 speed tranny. today i rode the clutch hard and could smell it burning. the clutch has always engauged very high up close to your foot as you let off of it. but today when i rode it hard, im hoping i dint burn it up. since it has always caught high, does this mean it is wearing out or can be adjusted? will i soon have to replace it? if so how much is a fair price for someone to do the labor with parts/ jeff
Can't recall, if there is an inspection plate, if so, suggest removing and check condition of the clutch for wear, gease and or oil. Inspect clutch linkage, make sure return springs, adjusting rod, clutch fork, etc. are aligned and in the correct position. If it did not take much pedal to engage the clutch it would seem there should be room for adjustment. Check the adjusting rod and see how far it's been extended, if at all. I would try adjusting, if everything else checks out, before disassembling.
As a do it myselfer, over the years have replaced a number of clutches on my 65's so not up on cost of labor. I suspect it would take a shop 3 hours to complete. The parts, new clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and surfacing the flywheel can run between $200-$250. Perhaps another member has had it done recently and can provide current info.
Also have the T18 in 1 of my 65's and prefer it over the 3speed w/ o.d. in my other. Replaced many of clutches with the T18, that's when I use to use the truck to lower sections of a tree I was cutting down. Without a manual the only thing I can suggest is perhaps going online and see if the pic's of a Ford Truck parts supplier is of any help. Here is the pic's from LMC, others may have a better description. Also suggest going online and requesting the supplier's free catalogs, helpful in getting an idea of the availability and cost of parts.
