About every 50 miles or so out of the blue the beast misses.
Then 4 times the last two weeks my truck died while at a stop!
When running it shuts down for a second, then continues to run fine.
When stopped, I have to start it again.
No other symptoms. Runs fine otherwise. Please help
Matt hit the common problems. Can you describe misses a little better? Is it an occasional cough/buck/jerk that happens once, or an intermittent rough running engine that lasts for a few minutes?
Do you get a check engine light when it does this?
CPS, or Cam Position Sensor. Had two go bad in the last month on me. Make sure you get the new grey CPS. You'll need a 10mm wrench, a flat head screwdriver, and some light to see it. It's behind the harmonic dampner on the front passenger side of the engine.
Its a cough, buck. Very intermitant. No rough running. No engine lights except when I turn the ignition before startup. Water in fuel line lights up. Cant say if it does all the time but I never noticed the water in fuel light untill last week when it rained 10 inches in a weekend. It got me thinking. So at empty I filled up again and added
Diesel Clean (not DK ). I have about 60 miles on the new tank and it bucked once and died at a stop once already. I checked for DTCs with my hypertech and nothing. I have a feeling its one of those things you cant duplicate when a mechanic is looking at it.
Sorry guys to sound so lame but is the CPS near the finger like piece that protrudes over the harmonic balancer? The HB looks like it has lines on it for timing?
Well I was 99% sure you had a CPS issue until you said water in fuel light. Of course if you actually had water in the fuel bowl then this explains the light. Also remember there is a recall addressing the CPS, so if you still have the old black one then get it changed.
As far as the intermittent buck/cut out issue with the water in fuel light I had a similar issue. Turned out to be chaffed wires on the main engine wiring harness. It's the thick wiring bundle that comes up and over the drivers side valve cover. You will need to remove the turbo air intake hose to really look at it. The wires come up to a square box that looks like it's mounted on the valve cover then continue up from this box. Check for chaffing issues against the valve cover, and also above the valve cover where the wires run through a metal bracket. I ended up paying a couple of hundred to Ford for a couple of crimp connectors and some electrical tape.

The CPS has the metal finger like piece on it, like for timing. A new CPS comes with the metal piece on it.. Unplug the wire from it, remove the small bolt 10mm socket, use a large screwdriver to pry it out!! Put alittle oil on the oring of the new one push it in, aline the bolt hole reinstall the bolt, Add alittle elec. grease to the plug, and plug it in.. Thats it.........
To empty the fuel water seperator you just flip the plastic lever by the fuel filter right?
Yep. The yellow lever rotates 90 degrees to drain the bowl. If you drain it, you might want to cylcle the key (turn the key to on but don't start for 15-20 seconds) 2 or 3 times to refill the bowl before you try and restart.
I drained the bowl for a minute or two and not much came out. Does this take a while or only a little comes out maybe 1 ounce. The CPS looks black not grey.

Reason: poor spelling

Black probably means it's original, or at least an original part (part number ending in A) that would be covered under the recall.
You won't see a whole lot of fuel coming out of the drain valve unless you turn the key on and let the fuel pump push a steady stream of fuel out. I'd recommend taking the cap off the fuel filter, pulling the fuel filter out, then draining the fuel filter bowl so you can watch the fuel drain out. Then put everything back together and cylce the key a few times.
