Recurving distributor on 460
I have a stock 1976 460. Block is D1VE, heads are D5's...
I am looking to pickup power, and heard stories from the 60's of dealers cranking out noticeable power just by recurving the distributor.
Thanks!
Mark

Ford started it; Ford will finish it!
To answer your question, the best way is to find somebody with a distributor analysis machine that will spin the distributor to 5,000RPM. Tell them what RPMs you want the advance to come in at and what total advance you want at a particular RPM. They'll change/cut the springs accordingly.
Example:
If you have a mild RV cam in a truck with a torque range of 1500-3,500rpm, you'd normally have 10 degrees advance at the timing mark and want an additional 26 degrees from the distributor at 1200-2500rpm for a total of 36 degrees all in at 2500rpm.
Every engine is different and the total degrees required depends on cam, C/R, stall converter, weight and rear end ratio. See a pro for determing what you need. Usually costs about $65.
Or, you can drive yourself crazy changing springs in the distributor and using a timing light that will read initial and total degrees of timing.
