The sides need 5-6 in. The front I would not go any less than 18-20. And make sure you have enough room for the rough in. That is pretty much a 12 in. standard. Back wall to center bolts. There are some manifactures that have a 10 in. rough in. Even ones that fit katty corner. which might work for you.
Ok, here's what I'm working with. I'm unfugging the previous owner's attempt at finishing the basement. He should pretty much be banned from Home Depot/Lowes, or anywhere that might sell tools or building materials. Not that I'm an expert, but I at least try.
Anyhow. This is in the basement. There is an existing toilet. It looks like the rough in is going to be about 16 inches from the finished drywall. That's with a standard 2x4 stud wall with 1/2 inch drywall. IDK why the rough in is that far up. It looks like the toilet now is a 10 inch rough in. It's not labeled anywhere.
So right now, I'm looking at moving the wall on the side in to 12 inches from the bowl. There is about 20 inches in front of the bowl. That can be messed with as I can adjust where the walls go. Also I could switch to a 12-14 inch rough in toilet (which I'll probably do) and get 2-4 more inches.
Are 14 inch rough in toilets special order? I didn't see any at HD and I really don't want to pay a ton of money for a toilet.
Oh and this is just a basement 1/2 bath in conjunction with a bar. We have two other full baths, so this is just going to be a quick trip kind of deal. I'm trying to maximize basement and bar space.
BLK94,
FWIW,
You can also purchase an offset closet flange and move the rough up to 2" back, forward or sideways.
Code is 15" to the sides from CENTER, 24" at the front.

Could you please link me to a flange?
So from the center of the bowl, you only need 15'' on the sides and 24'' at the front?
Mike
Edit: Nevermind, I found it. Looks pretty good. With my concrete basement floor, I'll have to build up a platform for the toilet to sit on with the offset flange. So that brings me to my next question.
How high can I go and it still be comfortable? Bowl height now is 15'' or 15.5''.
BTW-You just made my day with that flange.

Just chip out a little concrete and replace the flange. It will fit either over 3" or into 4" pipe but it will not seal *ONto* the flange you have now.
Yes it's 15"& 24" to the FINISHED wall surface, add 1/2" for rock on the rough.
Center of the FLANGE in the floor, not the bowl.
Glad to help you out,
Jim
