Hot C130s
I found these on a fighter forum. Apparently way back in the Carter era, they were considering some pretty daring hostage rescues using modified C130s.
As you can see, the tests apparently failed, but they came mighty close to some awesome performance

WOW! I can't imagine what that looked like from the pilot's seat. Or how it was controllable once they lit. You'd think they hit stall speed almost instantly, the vertical rockets floating you down from there. What control would you have? I've seen the assisted take off's in person, I don't think I'd want to be around for the landing though......
