Hey guys, I know this is probably in the archives somewhere and the search I did didn't return what I need so I'm sorry if I'm rehashing old threads but My van decided it had had enough and my project just became my every day ride. It's a 89 F-150 4x4 that is nickle and diming me to death. since I had to put it on the road last week unexpectedly I had to replace the fuel system from tank to injectors and the entire brake system including e-brake cables but not master cylinder(yet) Finaly got on the road Saturday and today the t-case took a crap right in the middle of the busiest intersection in town at rush hour. After deciding not to fix it with a push off a bridge, I need to get her going asap. The t-case is a bw 1356. I have a 1345 and a 208 for spares but looking at these I hope that I can replace the output shaft and housing from my 56 onto the good 45. This will save me from having to find (or fab) a driveshaft. Is this a doable swap ?
Thanks for any help on this if I don't figure it out soon I'm up the creek so to say.
Hooligan,
That sounds like Big Bucks, not nickel and dimes.
FWIW:Have you considered going to a power transmission specialist or a driveshaft shop and seeing if they can hook you up w/ a U joint that fits both yokes? (different size cups)
It might save you from having to tear into your transfer case.
Not being there I don't know if this would work, but it would be the easy out.
Good luck w/ your transpo. woes, I know what it's like.....
Most autopart stores (Autozone, Murreys) should stock Staggard U-Joints. They will have one size one on one axis and another size on a different axis. I 'm not sure who would have it.
I am currently in the same boat, had to get a new Transfer case, and the drive shaft won't fit due to length. What you can do is cut the boot off the rear of the drive shaft and mate it with the other yoke. Take that down to a driveshaft or tractor-trailer shop repair shop, and they can rebalance it for you. As long as it is the right length you will be fine, and it runs about 30.00.
