Gas prices going up and up and they decide to kill there small truck??? Who are these people? They should be working on building the most efficent truck on the road rather than building bigger fatter trucks. ANOTHER Ford mistake!
One little fact buried in the linked piece about Ford's $2 billion UAW savings is this: the Ranger is dead come 2009. It has been known for a while that the Twin Cities Plant in St. Paul, MN that makes the Ranger would close, and the closure date has been pushed back one year, to 2009. The Cleveland plant that casts engine blocks will also close that year. Credit goes to Automotive News for teasing out these new nuggets of info.
We wrote earlier about possible rescue scenarios for the Ranger, but it looks like the Ranger mine has been shut down and sealed off. Mulally has said that Ford will be more forthcoming about its plans at the Detroit show, so anything is still possible. However, after 26 years, it looks like the compact pickup truck thrill is gone. For you Ranger fans out there, the tune you're looking for is "Taps."
If Ford drops the ranger there will be a large hole to fill with gas prices going up and up. I dony know what Ranger sales generates for Ford but they nothing to fill the void of ranger sales. I would like to see them bring in some of options they use overseas as a diesel engine and crew cab, This has to bring in more sales here in the US. Diesel Cars and truck in Europ are geting 40 mpg. plus and capable of traveling at autoban speeds. We have been told they dont meet crash standards or smog in the US.
(A bunch of CARP)
Yeah...can you prove that? Or are you just saying that because you want an econobox instead of a Ranger?
Let us also not forget that Ford cares about profit more than anything else. If you believe otherwise, you're a fool.
Sure Ford will want to keep MPG numbers as high as they can, but that's also part of a careful balance to keep people buying Ford for multiple reasons (MPG, power, usefulness, etc.). Why pour money into a crewcab or diesel Ranger when the normal one already sells so well? You think they're going to look past their own pockets for that? Right... In our dreams...
I have an uncle who works at the Louisville plant and he swears that they are going to be made there, but under a different name.
Ford would be crazy to kill off a 4 cyclinder truck. If they do then I'll leave too and take my business else where. That would also mean they would also loose a sale in their cars because my wife drives Ford's also.
