Toyota Announces Diesel Engines For Tundra And Sequoia

I wonder what engine it will have, and what kinda of power it will have. Heres the link: http://www.truckblog.com/story-1567-...ra_and_sequoia

Hopefully this doesn't turn into another Ford Vs. Toyota thread that was pointless past the 2nd page.

Not sure what they will use, I don't know if their existing 4.5L V8 turbo diesel is competitive power wise. It has been used in Australia for some time now, but is a little short on power compared to what US customers expect.

I will be looking forward to seeing how all the new diesels end up doing mileage and reliability wise with the new ultra low sulfur diesel and all the emissions gear. I'll observe for 3-4 years and let them sort things out and then look at a diesel 1/2 ton if the option price of the motor isn't outrageous.

Interesting that Toyota anounces this now. Trying to p**s on the 09 F150 parade?

As for the thread turning pointless, I'm all for keeping it on topic.

Just wait though......

What's the Torque rating out of curiosity? I don't know why they bother with computing Horsepwer in diesel engines, Diesels are all about torque. But I guess that's the horsepower is the only number consumers understand anyhow.

260HP and 490TRQ would be great for a half ton. I bet it would get decent mileage too.

Probably Hino. Why would Toyota source somebody out? Ha, that'd be crazy seeing as how they have the resources. What would they name it though?

POWER RICE TURBO DIESEL....Yeah?

From what I understand the Hino unit used in the concept (an 8.0L inline 6) was so long that the dash was just a dummy. Which means the Hino block is way too long to fit in the eninge bay. So another desing is needed. While I would welcome an inline 6, the market seems to favor V8's even in a diesel.

Hino may have a large role in the design, and don't forget that Toyota now has a good sized stake in Isuzu as well. I also wouldn't rule out a colaboration with CAT seeing as how CAT is a Toyota NASCAR (fake racing) sponsor. A CAT branded diesel would carry quite a bit of instant credibility (deserved or not).

Seriously. That would probably put Toyota at number 1 in 1/2 ton diesel sales in a short period of time. Toyota reputation (a company that will actually stand behind their product) combined with one of the world's biggest and best diesel engine manufacturers? Winning combination.

I don't think so. Most diesels are bought for commercial use and service and parts availability is important to them. They stick to a particular brand because the technicians are familiar with them and they stock many parts or know where they are quickly available. Changing a fleet over to a different brand is expensive and time consuming. Toyotas are good vehicles but the parts are not cheap (little aftermarket) or quickly available. It would also require retraining the mechanics.

This is true. Didn't think of this haha. I still think it would be extremely popular with regular consumers who know the game.
