power steering hoses

Just wondering if anyone has made power steering hoses or if they are all store bought. I know that I can make them just want the right direction to go in because all the advice I can find leads to making a chevy pump work on a ford rack. I have all ford so I dont really need that info. Thanks in advance I hope.

I put a power steering pump out of a 68 mustang with a ford rack. I tried to get hoses made at a local parts store but it did not work out. I ended up buying hoses from Gotta Show. Ended up spending $150.00 for two stainless steel hoses and fittings. Expensive but they did work. If i would have done that in the first place i would have saved mysef a lot of aggravation.

I'm using a toyota power steering box (metric fittings) and a Saginaw power steering pump (GM, standard fittings).
I made my own hoses. The return hose is easy enough as its a non pressure hose. The pressure line was a bit trickier. First off the Toyota box has 2 different size fittings, 16mm and 17mm (I think) What I did was scour the wrecking yards and found me a pressure hose that had a male fitting on one side and female fitting on the other side. I can't remember what make and model it came from. I then took my original GM pressure hose and cut off the solid part. Then it was just a matter of installing a metric fitting on the other end and making a double flare on the steel line. I ended up with a short piece of hard line with a standard fitting on one end and a metric fitting on the other, this attaches to a flexible line with a female fitting on one end and a male fitting on the other.

Good luck, anything is possible
Bobby

So if I read this and understand correctly, you just need to take a poll then ?
If you have all Ford, then the only 2 choices are make them or buy them. I have done both. If they are still available as a stock item at a decent price buy them for your application. Just check to condition of the rubber if it is NOS for an older app.
When this option is not possible due to age of engine ,mix of components or obsolete stock, then have them made. At this point you get to select the hose vendor, the type of hose and the type of fittings. I use a hydraulic hose supplier that has a full line of S/S braided, rubber and teflon lined hose as well as steel, S/S and anodized alum fittings. Make sure to get swivels at the ends to make it easy to install. If you have no old hoses to copy, mock up with heavy wire and create your own custom routing while you're at it.
Hope this helps a bit. PS: Hose,Hydraulics,Fluid power are but a few of the catagories in the yellow pages. Good luck,
Jon

I just looked in your gallery and realized that you probably already know all the stuff I just posted since you are laying frame with airbags. The truck is going to be a knock out and your GF takes great pics. What is a mexican 302 ?? I have never heard that b4. I have a 1969 Vette 350 that has a mexican block and if is heavier with thicker webs. Just curious. Nice work.

I hope I"m not too late for this ,It could turn into a good thread , II"ve also found myself wandering around the shop ,wondering how I"m going to scratch this task off my list. Specifically , is there a site anyone knows about for Ford Pwr steering hose-end identification??I think I"m looking at a 16 and 14 mm inverted flare at the T-Bird rack and 16 mm at the Ford pump ,If I have to ,I"ll take the rack and the pump to the local Hyd-shop for positive I.D ,just like to know what I"m doing ..Being the technical kinda people we like to try to be ..Gotta Go...Be back later..thank"s

Remember the pressure side of the hoses operates at ~ 2000# psi at full lock. When I was shopping for hoses all the hydraulic hose shops told me they will not make PS hoses for that reason. Earls does sell some PS rated hose and An- fittings to make your own. IIRC the MII style rack uses less pressure than a recirculating ball type box so be sure your pump is pressure regulated for rack application. I'd expect both ends of your hose needs to be 16mm inverted flare, sorta the industry standard in late models. If so there is probably a stock hose on the parts shelf you can use, just have to find someone who is interested in searching the parts catalog or call Gates customer service, I found them to be very willing to help when I was searching for hoses.

Ax ,Thanks for the insight ,Congratulations on Retirement are 1st in order though ,maybe now you will have alot more Qaulity time to spend with the wife, pup,Gracie ,.and just some good times with Life all around..again ,Best Wishes! On to the hoses ,I"m new to this forum ,there probably is info out there but don"t know where to find it ,maybe I"m looking for some Tech article.I usually con can match a nut I need by Finding a bolt to "fit the nut " measure the bolt, check it with thread-pitch gauge ..Voila! But howdo you determine what hose fitting goes into some pwr steering-rack bore?? My solution is close to the above method. To be honest with you I thought about the pressure regulator ,may or may not be an issue , and I have"nt seen the 16 or 14 mm adapter to A.N hose yet ,may just have missed it ,I"ll look a little slower tonight. With all the different "possibilities" A.N 37%,45 double -flare ,inverted flare,Bubble-flare,Pipe thread...see where I"m going ?? Meant to do some research on the net last nite, but fell asleep about 2 min after dinner...lol..thanks ..and Good Luck!!

What power steering pump are you using? Ford used several styles, and because of that, the hoses will not interchange.

1965/77 P/S hoses will NOT work on 1978 and later pumps. The attachment is completely different.

From what vehicle is the P/S rack & pinion from?

If the pump and rack are from a 1980's and later car, you may be able to find original P/S hoses that will be the correct length.

As mentioned above, only the pressure hose will be an issue, there's little or no pressure on the return hose.

In fact for many years, only one end of the return hose had a fitting, the other end was plain hose that used a hose clamp to attach it to the nipple on the pump.

1low50 ,I thought about this alot today and I dont know "exactly",what pump/rack you are using, street rodder mag,sept.98 ,has just such an article;it appears like Ax say"s the GM pump produces 1000-1400 PSI ,your rack (mustang ii..?) requires 600-850 PSI ,thus with a combination of weight distribution ,(eng. placement etcyou may experience some oversensitivity, Mullins steering Gears,AZ, offers a flow-control-valve shim kit(or at least they used to) to lower your GM pump, down to a managable 800 PSI for the mustang rack. The other option in the same article ,Heidt"s Hot Rod Shop offers an "adjustable" valve, goes between rack and pump ..lets you "by-pass" rack.,high press. just goes thru valve , then right back to the pump resevoir..as a side note ,question; are your rack inlet+ outlet size"s 1/2 x 20 ??? Good Luck!! thats gonna be one-low-50!!!

One of my new magazines (Street Rodder?) has a good article in it on engine speed and driven acessories. Something we may not think about is what rpm are we driving the pump at? The article was mostly concerned with running too slow after adding an OD transmission, but is also applicable to running too fast. A pump that is spinning too slow will cause sluggish steering response at low speeds, one that is driven too fast may make the steering too sensitive at higher speeds. This is especially important when mixing engines, trannys, pumps and steering boxes from different makes and eras.
Just because the pump comes with a certain size pulley off the shelf or out of the salvage yard doesn't mean it's the correct size for your application. If you don't like the response your new setup is giving you, you might try switching pulley size.

Sorry i couldn't respond earlier (work out of town as of late).

I have a power steering pump from a 5.0 mustang '89 if I remember correctly. it does have the hose that uses a clamp on the return side. There are numbers on the rack but not sure if they will help as they are not stamped in. 53-6406 below that 04087 72 0104. it is supposed to be a mustang style rack.

All the pulleys came from the 5.0 as I changed that system to the serpentine setup. I plan on changing the trans to the 4r70w style overdrive so it should still spin closely to the same speed as the original aod that was in the mustang.

One last thing, is there an easy way to identify the threads as I have all standard style taps and have no real experience with identifying the metric style .

Thanks for all the replies, its always good to know there is good help and experience out there.
