Lightbulb What Does Psi Cold Mean?

I just put my stock studded snow tires on my 95 f 250 4x4 pickup for the winter and i noticed it says 80 psi cold max..Im guessing the max amount of air i can put in is 80 psi but why do they say on the tire 80 psi max cold?what is the cold part all about?anyone know?

As tires get used, they heat and air expands.. Generally that increase is about 10psi for every X of Temperature.. For instance my Toyo runs 45psi all around.. When I get going and moving, my tire temp gets to 100F and my pressure goes to 54psi.. Monitor it with a Hella TC-400 TPMS System..

So the Cold part is referring to the PSI of a Tire that hasn't been moved.. It's a pita to get it right because you heat the tire up going to an air station..

You're not exactly safe (less traction with greatly overinflated tires), and you'll probably have a bone jarring ride, too. Usually there's a sticker around the driver side door, and that has the manufacturer's recommendation -- normally that's the max you want in your tires, though for an empty truck you don't need that much.

Your talking bout Stock tires... He just upgraded to Studded Snow tires.. So the door sticker means jack to him.. He has to go by what the Tire says and then decide..

Your fine bud.. The door sticker only refers to the stock tires.. When you move to Studded, things change.. You can't follow that door sticker, you follow the tire.. If it says 80psi Cold.. then put 80 in and drive around.. See how it feels.. If its REALLY rough, which its a Studded Tires so it's going to be.. You can drop it bout 5 psi and see.. Sometimes the smallest amount of air remove gives the largest gain..

It's actually the width of the tire that counts -- in general, wider tires need less air. But if you like it rough, be with it. Optimal pressure has been explained here several times, if anyone want to search on it.
