A friend of mine has a 89 bronco 4x4,5.0,e4od
he has described a strange problem with the od.first the motor was swapped with a 94-5.0 used 89 computer, changed firing order, the problem is that going between 40 and 45mph the trans stays in drive, until he lets off the gas for a stop sign and then the truck will shift into od.it then shifts down through the gears so fast that it acually slalls the truck will stopping.my question is could the tv cable need adjusting or should he maybe swap to a 94 computer?any help is appriecated
Pull codes first and also verify that it is an E4OD, a TV cable means it is an AOD while the E4OD is completely electronic with the exception of the Manual lever shift like an auto tranny.
unfortunately when we swapped motors the scanner he had no longer reads the codesall it gives is an error.i will verify which tranny he has, maybe his scanner has gone south, ill ask him to go to a parts store and get thempulled.thanx guys for the help
Sounds to me like the very first thing you need to do is determine which tranny you have.
Somewhere in that timeframe, trucks went to the AODE/E4OD---dont recall exactly which year. 302's may have had an AODE or maybe it could have had the old AOD. The AOD is the only one that had a TV cable.
I had an 88 351 (before they went to the 5.8L ) that only came with the C6 (auto).
I understand you need some assistance, but you aint gonna get any good help until people know exactly what you had, what you did, and what you now have.
Code readers are not worth anything if you have processor engine controls and manual trannys. Dont waste your time trying to run one down. Now thems my 2 pennies!!
Chris if you had gone to that website you would see that a code scanner is not necessary to pull codes. we will need you to confirm which tranny you have in there now. if the motor had been mated to an e4od and is not mated to an AOD and the wrong flexplate was used this would destroy the tranny quickly.
hey guys!!thanx for the input , my friend did go to the website and he pulled 2 codes from the ecu. one was for the maf sensor and one was for the egr,he is working on these now. it is an aod,the trans was rebuilt when we swapped motors and the trans shop told him it was a E4od,but he confiemed it does have a tv cable so it has to be a aod.thanx again!!!
Glad you zoomed in on the tranny . If it is the TV adjustment, make sure you get to it quickly, heard numerous stories about damaging one thats not adjusted. Also curious, (dont think you said) if the rebuilder put any sort of shift kit in it or even did some of his own mods.
BTW---also had several 302's before they became the 5L
no ,the tranny was rebuilt with no mods.i too have heard the stories about the damage that can be caused by an incorrectly adj.cable.no button for od and we'll count the tranny bolts.
i have a 460 before they came 7.5's!
Its easy to tell the differnce between the AOD and E40D. On the AOD, the front driveshaft is way shorter than the rear. Because the E40D is so long, the driveshafts are about the same. (The front may be longer)
I think that the AODE may have also been used somewhere in that time frame. It also had an OD button like the E4OD. I doubt it would be behind any of the 351's. Dont hold me to that one!!
chrisf250-460-- Heck with these trucks how about the Machs! I have a "70" 351C/FMX/gulfstream Aqua, or I think its still in the garage under all that sh-----crap! I plan on an AOD with the 4R70W gearset. Dont really want to have to "row" through all those gears with a stick----I'm lazy.
well he had the tv cable adjusted and that helped with his problem.many thanx to all.
benshere-love the MACH I's!!! mine has the 351c/fmx drivetrain also. originally a 351w/c4 car.im planning a rack and pinion steering upgrade, front disc brakes, and 17" wheels.right now its metallic silver, gonna repaint it just not sure what color yet.. gulfstream agua is a nice looking color.do you have the shaker hood?
Nope, no shaker hood, sure would like to do one though. I have looked at the rack & pinion setups, would also like to do that. I dont know if my pockets are deep enough for all the stuff that "Global West" has for them. Get rid of all that linkage and open up for headers, exaust etc. Mine already had front disks, but could stand an upgrade.
I'll PM you so we dont get jumped because of the thread stealing thing-----but wait a minute, you started this thread Guess it should be on another forum----what the heck!
