[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Feb-02 AT 00:51 AM (EST)]The ign key won't turn, steel rod that runs on top of steering column towards fire wall goes to white plastic box, it trys to move but won't. Question is do I have to drop the column to get at this? Keys have always been good. Thanks
I would guess that the lock cylinder has failed making it necessary to drill out the tumblers so the cylinder can be turned to the run position to remove it.
Thanks for the reply. I was thinking the problem was at the other end of the linkage from key tumblers. There was some sluggishness with the switch returning to run after start so maybe you're on to something. Never drilled tumblers before, is it a pin behind the switch turning tabs that will release tumbler? Thanks again, Jay
First I would go get a new lock cylinder so you can better understand how to remove it. Notice that it has a small pin protruding from it. This locks it in the column. When you turn the new lock cylinders key clockwise while pushing in on the pin you will notice that there is a point where the pin will retract into the cylinder. This is the position at which you can install it. This is also how you have to remove the old one. Turn it to on and push in on the locking pin (thru the hole provided on the outside of the column) and pull the cylinder out. Since it won't move you have to remove the tumblers. Start by breaking off the cover where the key goes in. Take a 3/8 drill bit and drill down the center of the cylinder no more than an inch and 3/4. Take a small pick, like a dentists pick and dig out the tumbler pins. Drill and dig, drill and dig. Go slow and keep at it until you can wedge a screwdriver in the hole and turn the cylinder to on, push in on the locking pin and pull the whole cylinder out. Clean out shavings and install new cylinder and drive away.
