I'm new here and learning alot. Has anyone used a rebuilt engine from Autozone? I have bought a 302 for my 66 Bronco and had no problem. I now want to put a 390 in my 66 slick. Any advise would be great.
Thanks, Buzz
Secondly, since you have experience with their product, if you would be comfortable going that route, have at it. I built the motor that went into my truck. To be honest, I would look into a store motor if I could specify the cam for the engine. If you do go store bought, get one for a passenger car, they run a higher compression than the truck motors....
FWIW- if you are planning on spending that kind of money you wish to check out the speed shops . i have this friend that is a mechanic and he ordered my motor for me. 390. came completely ready to install. heads are ported and polished, new 4 barrel demon carb. and intake. duraspark distributor, high performance plug wires. valve covers were already installed, it was dynoed and tuned before it was shipped out. 5 yr. 50,000 mile warrenty. there was a core charge so i had to ship my motor back to them which they paid for also. it was a little over 2800 bucks delivered. i put the water pump on it and installed it. i can honestly say it is a kick $%^ engine. i'm really glad i did it that way cause i found out that the only way to make sure all the push rods are the right length is to have it dynoed and then you have to take the rocker arms off to replace the push rods that are either to long or too short. the speed shop told me that he had to dismantle it five times to get the right push rods in it. i'm at work and cant remember the name of the speed shop. i think it was motor works out of Spokane Wash.. just a thought. Dutch.
What's the auto part warranty? I believe if you looking for just a basic standard motor that's probably a safe & less expensive route; I like the speed shop performance over stock. Back in my wild days the local speed shop had a motto that read "Speed cost money How fast do you want to go"?
You got me thinking of instead of building my 65 352 4v engine; I should just go crate & buy a 360 & clone it. lol
First and foremost, welcome to FTE. Had 390 in 65 rebuilt few years ago and it came to over $2200. Purchasing crated engines from various distributers is like a crap shoot. I would not purchase a rebuilt that's more than .035-.040 over. Prefer rebuilding engine I have the history on. However, had a 302 rebuilt at quite an expense only to have the cylinder wall crack within several thousand mi. Not familiar with Autozone parts suppliers, don't have any in the area. Seems that if familiar and satisfied with their rebuilt engines, they stand by their product and able to resolve issues locally then sounds like a good price.
Why not go 390, that's what I did and it looks pretty close to the old 352 (check out my gallery).

Mike; as you mention looks great; I made a comment awhile back in your gallery about your engine setup; I do plan on rebuilding my 65 352 engine; its from a 65 Galaxie 500 4 barrel car; since trucks where only two barrel I like spending more on gas with the 4V combo lol. My only part lacking is to change the oil filter mount from vertical (car version) to horiziontal mount for truck. I know I can use a 360-390 version as well (posted in calssfies). My question is will OEM 352 valve covers fit a late 60's up 360 or 390 heads?

Mitch, I can dig around in my parts box for a truck mount if that's what you need. Also, I believe the 352 valve covers will fit, it seems they would not clear my adjustable rocker set up though (but I suffer from CRS....)
My nephew bought a 390 at Autozone to put in his Galaxie. It seems to be fine. I can't believe he gave up his pre-'66 heads for the ones that came with the crate motor though. They weren't far from being PI heads with some mods. Durn core charges!
