Have a few quick questions please.
1- I can't seem to find my glow plugs on my 93 Turbo. The Chilton’s says to remove the valve covers. Could they be under the covers? The turbo has lots of crap on it and many items are hard to see and since she sets up pretty high off the ground that doesn’t help either ..Where can I look...I'm sure mine are shot.
2- Also my power steering pump and hoses are almost imposable to see as well and one of them are leaky just setting in the drive way. I filled it up and haven’t as much as started the beast and the level has gone down. Sure seems like that would seem like the reservoir is leaking. So I'll replace that to be sure, is it difficult to remove? Looks like I have to remove the pulley, is that pretty straight forward? Any advice would be nice thanks!!
The glow plugs on a POWERSTROKE are under the valve covers. You should have an IDI in your 93. The glow plugs are located on the outside of the valve covers about 1 or 2 inches from the cover lip. They will be on the top side of the cover, with an individual wire running to each plug.
Check the return line from the cooler coil to the pump. I have had ther rubber line wear through. The cooler line is located on the frame crossmember between the front wheels. Hope this helps. Tom
Lonni, there were 2 diesels available in 93. the idi turbo, and the powerstroke. if it is an idi, the glowplugs and injectors are in the intake valley like this picture. http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e2...nsport/gp2.jpg
if they are not visible like in the picture, you have a powerstroke, and they are under the valve covers.
If your truck is a 93' then you got and IDI (indirect injected diesel) so your glow plugs are top of the engine, very easy to get to, check and replace. If you got a 94' your truck could be either the IDI or a powerstroke as Ford sold both that year. If you got a powerstroke the glow plugs are underneath the rocker covers and you should post your questions on the Powerstroke Forum as most guys like myself here dont know much about the computers that are used on the powerstroke engines.
As for the powersteering, I never had a reservoir leak, it usually is a bad or poorly connected hose or a leaking steering gear or a bad pump seal. I would give the beast a good pressure wash first and then look for your leak before you start replacing. Front end repairs, including the power steering pump and box are not cheap so you want to start with the component that is giving you trouble first rather than change the pump only to find your steering box is leaking or a hose. Note, the one lesson I learned with Ford Front ends is that if they are bad you might as well fix the whole thing properly. I ended up going thru a steering gear and pump when my problems all along were with the universals and Tie-rods that were rusted up and worn out and putting in a new steering gear and pump did not fix the problem so I ended up doing it all over again right the second time. Unfortunately the whole thing is not cheap to do but you will be oh so glad once it is fixed right believe me.
All the info you guys gave was great. I'm pretty sure I have the IDE but with my turbo on it's so hard to locate those dang things...it's hard to even see the dang intake manifold...the picture was good but I didn't see anything like that but I'll have to look some more. Like I said with they way she sets it's so hard to see anything, and the Turbo doesn’t help. It blocks allot in and of it's self. Guess I take the suggestion and degrease what I can and slip my washer in there and clean what I can of the front end and see just where the leak is, thanks all!
Lonni, i should have been a little clearer with the picture description. that is looking in from the driver side at the front of the engine.
you can see the injectors rite above the valve cover.
they are the 2 things with the lines going from them into the clamp with the 3 lines in it.
directly on top of the injectors are the glow plugs. they are the little things where it looks like the area surrounding them is painted silver.(that is actually never-seize from the install)
to see the injectors and glow plugs, you may have to take the air filter housing and intake off.
i am not familiar with the factory ats system, i have a highly modified banks system on my truck.
well I see your's but with my Banks Turbo in the way and the beefy fuel pump setting there it's hard to see squat...i'll have to look some moer but I've never seen anything like that...makes me wonder now.. I don't even see the wreing harness I should see.
Looking straight down from the top on a NA IDI motor.
Follow the fuel lines from the IP to the injectors.
Just inboard of the injectors are the glow plugs.
Very close to inline with the intake manifold bolts which are painted red in the picture.
You can only clearly see two glow plug connectors in the picture.
Third cylinder back (6) on the bottom bank.
Last cylinder back (7) on the top bank.

wow Dave mean looking motor you have there..I'm so surprised even in a what looks simi-torn down they are really stucking out there. But this gives me a good idea. Thanks
The color came from all the Chevy heartbeats is has devoured.
I let it chew on a Cummins from time to time as well.
With fuel getting as high as it is, I guess I better be finding a muzzle for it though.
Chewing on a Cummins gets the MPG down in the single digits, but it is enough fun I don't mind to much.
Wow I can't believe it I found those silly glow plugs. Yup they've been hiding all right. I don't believe just how small they are, that's one reason the other is the wire gauge is so small clean and black that it looks like a fuse wire for something like an in line fuse of some sort. Question, I noticed that the wire attaches to the plug with a white looking plastic cap of some sort. It almost looks like one half of a in-line fuse. Does it rotate or just a gentle pull to remove it? I did notice one was broken in the middle so I know that one isn't working... and I hear it take a deep well 10 mm to remove it. any of suggestion to replace? I guess I should also blow the area to remove any dirt and junk first..man these things are smaller then a pencil. At least I'm part way there...replace these and then off to the Power steering leak!
