Help! I have a 1997 F-150 6cyl with 153000Km (85000Mi)on it. I drove it to work Monday morning and everything was fine. When I started it at noon it began ticking wildly and blowing smoke. I called the dealership to tow it in. They told me it was a bent rod, and that the entire engine needed to be replaced. Luckily I purchased an extended warranty (I bought it as a lease return), because the damage was quoted at over $4000!!! I have done regular maintenance since I bought it 40000Km ago in early '99 and am shocked that it would self-destruct like this.
I am concerned. Does anyone have any hints as to why this would have happened??? A new engine under warranty at 150000Km is nice, but I had heard they should last at least 300K...
Thanks in advance for any information,

Your head gasket must have started leaking coolant into the combustion chamber and when you started it, there was enough coolant that it bent the rod. Not much could be done to prevent that.
That is a good impression, but if there was water, there should have been that tell-tale yellow foam, would there not?
I checked it out with the shop, and though they "still have not been able to tell me what happened", there was no foam in the oil, nor had I ever seen foam during previous mainteneance checks.
my 99 had 32k,, always smelt a hint of oil and used over a quart in 3k. some say thats normal. any way tapping noise kept getting louder and soon at all speeds. brought it in and rod was rubbing. new engine. have yet to pick it up.. in mean time driving a 2002 dodge ram quad cab.. its nice and still has a 6 ft bed. but i miss my truck.
my 97 F150 with the 4.2 6 cylinder did the same thing at 80,000 miles. Head gasket leaked into cylinder and when I tried to start it, it bent the #1 rod. Ford would not stand behind it at all. Two Ford mechanics told me they should cover it as this was an extension of the leaking front seal recall. I have been a Ford man all my life, but will question it on my next purchase.
