Hey to all first post for me here. I am ready to but a set of gauges gunna get the overhead mount from dieselmanor.com My question is which thermocouple is best and and where is the best mounting location exhaust manifold, up pipe or exhaust pipe. Mods are going on a 03 4x4 with 7.3 4 into 5 MBRP exhaust and a superchips programmer 6637 air filter. Any help is apprectiated.
Me personally, I bought a quality product and went pre turbo. I wanted accuracy more than anything. I went the clamp method on the up pipe and have had no issues with it at all for 6 yrs. However, when I order new up pipes on Monday I will switch it over to the manifold. It's worth the extra work to not worry about the ceramic washer breaking if it gets bumped or from the constant heat and cool cylcles.
The safest way obviously is on the downpipe, but as I said earlier , accuracy is pre turbo. Plus in all the years I've been posting and reading it's rare to hear about one grenading.
The key to gauges, especially the pyro thermocouple is spend the dough to get a high quality unit. The IIS Pro's are good, and actually the Autometer pyro probe is just as good, but the ISS Pro Gauges are better quality.
I'm sure you'll get plenty of opinions. Chew through them, and when you decide, have fun spending money.
I plan on getting an MKO after my guages are installed.
As far as which thermocouple is best I don't know but I'm going to get the drill and tap. If you look on dieselmanor's website they have instructions on where and how to install the drill and tap thermocouple.
Little dre, he already has the exhaust. The best method IMO is drilling and tapping the manifold. Ive done it on several trucks, and once the tap is started, its cake. I like the look and "feel" of the DiProcol Optix series.

whoops...I did a bunch of this last night......hopefully the brain will be a little more clear sooner rather then later.
Just follow the instructions. Start with small bit and keep getting bigger untill you get to the right size. The shavings will be so small that you don't need to worry about them. I went with the band type and have no problems with that setup.
