hello, im new to the site. i am working on a 2001 excursion limited black with gold lower cladding on the body. can anyone tell me how to remove the gold trim around the wheelwells and the rest of the body for painting? did for use any adhesive in ths area? thanks
The trim is glued on.... apparantly you can remove it with high test fishing line and removing the residue on the body with acetone. I'm going to do it with mine (not to repaint but to get rid of) as soon as the weather warms up.
thanks for the tip i was going to paint the plastic semi gloss black .the more i think of it though, after i remove the cladding, i think i will also leave it off.
I'm doing mine because a couple of pieces are damaged and instead of trying to find replacement trim, I figured it would be easier to eliminate. Also, I believe you can then add cheaper accessories from the F 250SD to the X like mud guards. If I need fender trim after, I think the X would look much better with some bushwacker flares...
I just took mine off for some bodywork. There are clips along the wheel well and underneath the wraparound just behind each wheel well. The top connection is 1/2" trim tape. I was lucky since it was around 0 degrees outside when I took them off so I was able to pull the trim off without the trim denting the body. If it is above freezing, you'll have to use a piano wire or knife to remove them and spend hours cleaning off the residue. If it is frozen, it will come of from the body completely, leaving no residue.
As for leaving them off, behind the rear wheels on my 2000 Ex, there are some stampings under what is covered by the trim. They would need to be filled in and repainted or it will look like the trim is missing.
I didn't figure out how to take off the door cladding, but I think there is some sort of clip system and not tape, but I didn't look too closely at them.
I'll try to post a picture of the body stampings during lunch.
If you look past the bad lighting and shakey hands, you'll see that there are four holes along the bottom that would need to be filled in or covered if you don't plan on putting the cladding back on.
thanks for the pic.i think i will wait till it warms up to remove mine.i think once the plastic is pliable it should be easier. my ex.is black with the gold lower panels. im trying to go with the blackout look with black mojave rims with an all black body. thanks for all the tips.
