i have a 1979 ford f150 with a 351 cleveland w/4 on the floor. i replaced the fuel pump/filter and lines, i have strong blue spark, newley rebuilt carb and it still wont start. any suggestions.
thanks
In other words, you have strong blue spark but it could be occurring at the wrong time to light the fuel mixture. Without knowing anything about the ignition system on this end, check the timing. The timing chain could have jumped a tooth, the distributor may be installed 180* out of time, or it may be just out of time far enough that it won't fire.
Correct, which is why I said to check the timing, then gave some possibilities as to why the timing might be off without specific knowledge of the ignition system in question.
A possibility especially if it's one of the $20 specials instead of a Motorcraft unit. I've never checked to see if the module is delivering spark when it is failing though.
Fordboy, is carb and filter the only thing you changed or touched? If your truck ran fine prior to the maintenance you did, look at those things as your primary suspect. Take a peek down the throat of the carb, hit the accellerator a couple of times, you should be seeing gas squirting as you move the lever. A brief whiff of starting fluid, or about an ounce of gas will confirm a motor that wants to run, but does not have fuel. If that does not help, you have other issues(timing, firing order, severe vacuum leak.) You can check your timing as you crank the engine over. Clean the balancer, and make a bright visible mark where you want the timing to be.
Clarify won't start.....stutter and no start or no start at all. Does it sound like it won't catch (fuel ignites periodically and wont fire and run) or like no fuel at all and doesn't even attempt. Did you muck with the ign wires and timing? Try a new ignition switch or hot wire. I pulled my hair out on mine for 3 days, swapped ign module pickup in distr. coil, wires cap rotor rebuilt the carb, got stranded 200mi away only to find that the ign switch went. good luck
On my Crew, I removed the body lift, and the truck would not start, motor would turn over no problem, fuel and spark, but would not catch. I readjusted the linkage to the carb, and it caught and started right away, is it possible the linkage is not adjusted properly and the initial circuits are getting gas? Not overly carb friendly, so I can't say what circuit or what to check more than that. I adjusted the linkage so that the plates were fully closed, and that did the trick.
