Removal and Installation

WARNING: Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and can be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

WARNING: Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is not running. Before servicing or disconnecting any of the fuel lines or fuel system components, the fuel system pressure must be relieved to prevent accidental spraying of fuel, causing personal injury or a fire hazard.

With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 .
Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 .
Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 .
Disconnect the 2 fuel filter fuel tube quick connect fittings. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 .
Remove the fuel filter from the fuel filter bracket.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Apply clean engine oil to the end of the fuel tube before connecting the fitting.

Special Tool(s) Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS)

Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) with appropriate adapters, or equivalent diagnostic tool

NOTE: The splash shield is located on the LH frame rail under the driver side door.

Disconnect the splash shield and position aside.

Disconnect the electrical connector.

Start the engine and allow it to idle until it stalls.
After the engine stalls, crank the engine for approximately 5 seconds to make sure the fuel rail pressure has been released.
Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
When fuel system service is complete, connect the electrical connector.

Reposition the splash shield and install a new push pin.

NOTE: It may take more than one key cycle to pressurize the fuel system.

Cycle the ignition key and wait 3 seconds to pressurize the fuel system. Check for leaks before starting the engine.
Install the diagnostic tool. Turn the key ON with the engine OFF. Cycle the key OFF, then ON. Select the appropriate vehicle and engine qualifier. Clear all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and carry out a PCM reset.
Start the vehicle and check the fuel system for leaks.

I just disconected both lines to my fuel filter and put a new one in. Got a minor amount of fuel out but otherwise it has worked fine for me a few times.

I've done hundreds of fuel filters and NEVER depressurized the system. Just put an oil drain pan under the filter to catch fluid, and watch the eyes incase some fuel sprays out.
