I have a 92 f250 HD 4x4 w/351 and I am looking to replace the factory trans cooler for an aftermarket unit that will handle towing my fifth wheel. Just had the trans completely custom rebuilt and would like to replace before this spring time.
Don't by a new one for 100+ bucks, stop at your local junk yard, should have a box of em they've pulled from trucks. I got me a real nice one to add to mine for 20 bucks at my local yard.
I added it "in series" with the stock one so it now has two very large coolers effectively more then doubling the area. So much "cooler" in there now they just about cover all the radiator behind the grill!
What about a beefier radiator? I mean my truck & trans used to run hot all the time but I bought an aftermarket cooler and a extra capacity finned trans-pan and it dropped the temp a ton. Motor still runs too warm from time to time, but I'm thinking about going for an aluminum or a 4-row with heavy duty cooling on my stroker project. But I guess it's not good to run too cool, but I'd recommend a new good cooling system if you wanted to spend the dough (especially for towing)
While you'll probably be fine with a used trans fluid cooler, I'd shy away from that, especially if it's a plate style cooler. If any debris from the previous transmission is still in the cooler, it will inevitably end up finding its way into your transmission. A good flushing (and I'm not just talking about spraying some brake clean through the thing) will usually be fine for a tube and fin style cooler. However, the plate style coolers are known to be difficult to flush debris out of.

Just something to keep in mind.

No, good lookin out but the one I picked is a tube and fin type and I poured fluid out of it in my hand right there on the spot and looked at it. Looked pretty clean so I brought it home and flushed it out before putting it on.
Real nice one, all copper. I'd hate to have to pay what it cost new! Had the mounts I needed right on it to.
