i have a 93 ford ranger, 3l auto that has an idle problem that i have lived with for a while but enough is enough. on cold startup the engine will idle up and then settle down to about 600. and from that point on it is continually going from a near stall codition to about 1200 rpms, regardless of engine temp. there are no driveability problems oter than it is hard on fuel. any help is greatly appreciated sam
Hopefully you'll get some responses from the really experienced owners but these are the types of things that you have to isolate whether they are fuel or ignition/electric related to my knowledge. Or emission related. Are you getting a MIL, if the light is on you need to post all the codes here so they can be chased. If you don't have a reader, most auto parts places will pull codes for you free. Other than that I guess I start with the basics, fuel filter, plugs, wires. I don't know if your engine is fuel injected but that's another consideration. Rough idle and eating fuel can mean lots of things. Have you done a search of the forum for other threads with your engine and same symptoms?
Kinda sounds like the IAC (Idle Air Control) is acting out, so remove it & try cleaning it with a srpay cleaner that says it's formulated for cleaning MAF sensors & see if you get a positive result.
clean the throttle body and the valve, make sure to get it all. Let me know how that goes, and I will assist you from there. If you give me the right details I can definately help you.
