Solid cam question

OK tommorow I am goin to order in my cam. However I am stuck between two cams. One is a hydraulic extreme 4x4 cam. But I am also lookin at a solid cam that looks real appealing.

Is anyone using a solid cam? Are there any drawbacks besides to occasional adjustment? How are they for power? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Solid cam question

I've used them in several engines. They do require an adjustable valve train. Preferably roller rockers, but you can use the '68-71 rail rocker set-up with aftermarket lock nuts if you're not going to exceed 5500rpm. Once you get the valve lash set, they require no more maintenance than adjusting the preload on hydraulic lifters, something most people neglect. Should be worth 30hp over the same grind specs using hydraulic lifters.

Solid cam question

Thanks George. I went out and shelled out $220 canadian for a spankin new solid cam. Should be here in 10 days via freight. In case anyone is wondering it is the first cam on the list in comps catalogue. .540 lift, square pattern cam. And I am going to use magnum rollers, with new screw in studs.

Solid cam question

Any particular reason you went with square duration instead of a dual pattern favoring the exhaust?

Solid cam question

Well, as I mentiond in another thread, I am having the heads ported to 200cfm on the exhuast side. I decided to try a square pattern cam, as the dual pattern was no longer as important.
