Check for spark. Your new ignition might have been a dud. Also make sure the rotor is turning under the cap while you crank the engine.

Pull a plug and see if it's wet with fuel. If it is, the plugs may be fouled and you need to dry them out or get new ones. If they are fouled out, the engine will not even try to fire.

you were right i changed out the plugs and it fired rightup, however it died 5 minutes later when the plugs were pulled the second time(after fireing) they were very dry and very black (fouled Again) also for some reason when its trying to start the carb will start pushing fuel through the tube on top of the bowl. any suggestions

When you checked for spark, was it right after it had quit or after the engine had cooled off for a while? I've seen ignition modules go bad once they heat up, yet restart once they've cooled. If it's the GM HEI style, was the dielectric grease used between the module and dist housing? It helps with heat disipation also.

it was both after it had quit and after it had cooled a while i will admit there was a stronger spark when cooled but still a good spark when hot

The carb pushing fuel out the top is your problem. That's what's fouling the plugs. The float needle is sticking in the carb, and overfilling the bowel with fuel. Then it runs over into the engine. It works much like the tank on the back of a toilet. If there are rust flakes or dirt in the fuel system, these particles can get into the float needle and hang it open.

Check the carb out. And make sure the fuel filter is good. Most OEM fuel filters are spring loaded, so when they clog, the fuel pump pressure will push them back and let unfiltered fuel go around them. If you find you have a lot of brown stuff in the fuel, you may need a new gas tank.
