My electrical seems to be surging. Hooked up a volt meter(at the batteries), it pulses between 12.5v to 14.5v then back again. head lights pulse, Amp gauge in dash pulses. Batteries seem to be holding a charge. any ideas what could cause this situation? does it hot or cold. Already changed the alternator. Is there a external reg somewhere that could cause this?
If you do have an external regulator, it is usually mounted on the passenger side inner fender. It's a silver square box. Bolt a wire under one of the mounting bolts, and bolt the other end to battery negative, and the problem should go away. While you are at it, check all the grounding over in that area. If I remember correctly, there is a short wire already grounding the reg to the metal part of the fender, and this ground goes to the battery negative. If you have all this, take it all apart and clean it all up and make sure the connection the battery negative terminal is good.
Yup, dead voltage regulator, Autozone has them for around 15 bucks. The same thing happened to me. What year is your truck? Most of them have external regulators (unless they have the ambulance package or someone has converted them). My 89 takes a VR749...pretty sure the 86 takes the same regulator (I know the alternator is the same).
I will also agree with the truck info in the signature line.
It sure does make it easier to offer advice since there are several differences from year to year.
You do have to have a minimum of 25 posts before the signature option will work though.
