in Maple Ridge (Haney) there is a guy that has one of these, but he moddified it one step further, he added a second axle. When I saw it last, it wasn't a live axle yet. He was waiting for the custom axle he had ordered, to have a fully working 4x6.

Man this thing was freaking HUGE. I wish I had taken pictres.

 

I just had a guy try to buy my '76 HighBoy today at the grocery store.I said no way,and pointed to the box beside containing $800.00 in front end parts.

 

sedly: I'm looking for a Highboy also! If you know of one in the Vancouver/ Lower mainland area for sale, please give me a 'heads-up'. Want a 300 I6 with 4 spd if possible. Cheers for the New Year!

I will for sure,and you can't go wrong with the 300 I6.That's exactly what I got with the 4 spd.Absoloute stump puller.

BUT what is a Highboy? And why is the 300i6 so good? My truck has that engine, and its alot more than I expected for a 6cyl.

 

I have taken this info from another thread to help explain.A HighBoy ia a Ford truck that came from the factory as having the following.Built from 1967-77.5,F250,4x4,divorced transfer case.Trucks that are not considered a HighBoy are-any truck built after mid 1977.It goes by consecutive build number in the vin#,anything built starting y80001 is a 77 1/2,anything other than an F250.Front axle choices in the HighBoy were either the 8 lug Dana 44 or the old style low-slung pinion Dana 60 (commonly referred to as the Dana 50).This basic definition was provided by FTE user BigBuddy.I can also add that the HighBoy came factory with a 3'' body lift,these trucks came stock higher than other trucks from the factory.FTE has a forum that specifically deals with 6 cylynder engines,search the forum and you will find out exactly what makes these engines so good.Personally I prefer the carbourated I6.I hope this helps.

 

A Ford "Highboy" is an F250 made from about 1973 to about half way through 1977 with a narrower frame, higher suspension, so-called 'divorced' transfer case (short drive shaft between the trans and the transfer case), narrower (2.5 inch wide) rear leaf springs, gas tank in cab, etc etc.

I can't say why the Ford 300 inline six is so good except that it is obviously 'understressed' with 7 large main bearing journals and very strong cast iron (alloy) block. The long stroke (about 4 inches) gives excellent torque but probably is not ideal for high revs.
In general, straight sixes are very easy to balance, especially compared to V6s that apparently are difficult. If you think about some of the smoothest engines in BMWs & Mercedes, the old Jags & Maseratis and the recent Japanese luxury models, they are straight sixes.
I'm sure there are many important engineering advantages to the good old iron six but many people have simply been impressed by the durability and low maintenance..... so I like the 300 I6 the best in a workhorse Ford pickup.

 

I knew about the length of the stroke. Being that it is a 300 CI 6cyl, (2" off a 302V8).. I like my truck, just for the shear size of her. I merge and people move the hell out of my way.

But I didn't know about the balance of the engine. I do notice that the engine is quieter than my Dad's 3.3L Plymouth Voyager, and my truck doesn't have the vibration of the Chrysler. I just wish I got better gas mileage, but I came from a 2.2L V4, straight to the 4.9L I6.

Is that picture at the top, a true Highboy? I just googled "Highboy ford" images, and I'm getting nothing but 1930 to 1933 roadsters??

 

Yes the picture Zip posted is a HighBoy crew cab,they came single cab also.As far as the old cars you found I have heard of them reffered to as "Hi-Boy"as well,but I don't know alot about them.

 

I had a buddy with a 66 with the 300. Ran pretty decent with a 4bbl carb. Put a header on it, sounded like a school bus. We busted more ujoints out of that thing than I care to remember. We used to replace them on the side of the road in no time.

 

There is a fella from the sask chapter that I met that had a 4 barrel on his 1986 or so 300, and had a header and dual exhaust, it sounded pretty cool.

 

I have been looking into this,a performance guy at the coast didn't recomend the 4 barrel unless I was looking for speed,high rpm's.Which I don't want,I want to keep the torque.So I am going to put 2 1/2" exhaust and get that I6 to breathe better.
