351 timing advance(complicated)

Hey guys I have been throwing it around and figured tonight I will just ask.
Advancing the timing more power but kills the mileage?
anyone ever do it on one that has a crank trigger? mine when I look to where there should be timing pointer I have a crank sensor and a 4post crank trigger?
Help?

Thanks
Curtis

I'm no authority at all on your question, but advancing the timing is as likely to kill the engine as it is the mileage. But in theory, advancing the timing should increase the rate of acceleration, I don't know if that equates to power or not. But there are too many variables involved to be able to give a short answer, especially with someone who knows just enough to be dangerous like me. I will try to give you the miniscule amount of information that I am fairly certain of that may relate to your question, though. A common tactic to enable a vehicle to pass an emissions test is to SEVERLY retard the timing. I can attest to the fact that it has worked for myself and others. I cannot offer anything beyond supposition as to whether this relates to fuel economy or not, because the performance of a vehicle so altered, (we're talking barely running here), is so compromised that NO amount of fuel economy gained would be worth it. I would doubt any mileage gains could be acheived anyway because the best fuel economy will always be realized when a vehicle is at it's best balance in state of tune, which allows the engine to utilize the energy produced by the fuel to it's fullest potential. I contend it's possible to go both ways on this, with the added potential of engine damage and even failure through pre-ignition when leaning too far in the advance direction. In short, I believe the best performance and fuel economy are acheived with PROPER timing, and given strict limits and a very small window with which to play in, your assesment of timing effect to be valid. As for the crank trigger system, put one in front of me and I'll be just like the rest of the guys you see standing on the side of the road with the hood up, we might as well be 2 cows looking at a new gate.

Advancing the timing will produce more TQ and improve milage. The trick is to not go so far you induce detonation and burn a hole in a piston or 8. Every motor wll be different, depending upon the condition of the combustion chambers and fuel system, some motors will tolerate more advance than others. My motor has a set of modified E6 heads with the high swirl combustion chambers that I took the time to remove all sharp edges from. It has been happily running 17deg advance for 8 years now with no signs of quitting.
If your motor has a distributor you should be able to advance the timing. If it doesn't then you need a tuner.

Wow, put it on my snap on scanner got to my spark advance Deg. checked it out rev to 1000rpm then back to idle it was at 9-10 bumped it to 14 fuel gauge is not moving very much now and dead dig that 351 will lay you back in the seat and blow the tires off. I had it at 15-16 and it pinged a couple times brought it back in and turned it back 15-16 was but I don't want to run premium. Think my next thing is the original gt40s(port and polish) and long tubes.

Awesome- We both learned a little. You put those heads and long tubes on and you might break your neck. You won't regret it. It's gonna be a while before I can get my 351w (399 stroker) on the road, can I get a ride in yours?
