89 302 engine stall advanced troubleshoot, advice please

Hey guys,

89 F-150 302 auto. Running well, no previous problems, dies in traffic, no sputter at all on restart attempts. Swapped Thick Film ignition module roadside without any troubleshooting about 2 hrs later. Started right up, thought I had it solved. Approx 1 mile (5min) slight sputter then dies, wait 10 min restart, go another 1 mile, dies no restart at all.

Next day pull codes engine off: no active codes, memory codes 14 18 33. I think the 14 and 18 are related to my changing the ignition module day before ?? 33 I think is an EGR EVP gripe perhaps old and non relevant??

Engine started up pulled running codes: 21 33 44 94 which I think are from previous old smog related work I did.

Again engine stalled w no restart yet.

Question: with engine off, ignition key on to run position, I depressed schrader valve and although fuel shot out initially, after first spurt no more fuel flow, this is normal ? (engine off- key on)

EGR ? Ignition ? Fuel Pumps ? Fuel Filters ?

Any ideas welcome !

The fuel pumps only prime the system in "ON" so you shoudn't be getting hosed with gas unless the engine is running.

You can put a pressure gauge on that valve and get a reading. For the 5.0 I think you're looking for something like 35psi on the rail at idle.

Maybe Subford will come by with something to add.

With the engine not running, that's the same thing as WOT, you should see 45 PSI. If you pull 20 inches vacuum on the fuel pressure regulator, the pressure should drop as vacuum increases. Min pressure at 20 inches vacuum should be around 35 PSI.

When you have the no-start condition, have you checked for spark? If there is no spark, it may well be the PIP inside the dizzy that's gone south.

Thanks for the help guys, very appreciated. Yes I checked the fuel pressure and the problem was indeed the PIP.
