I used to have a pet worm. My parents smoked and drank, my mom once told me she wouldn't take all 3 of us in the car at once whithout a large adult beverage first. Still don't buy the bicycle helmet thing. I feel bad for those kids, no scars and no stories.
I never wore helmet to ride motocycles...had my share of falls, scratches, cuts, kissed the pavement on more than one occasion, threw stone at beehive and ran away, threw stones are my neighbor's glass window because she complained of noise, beat up other kids and sometime other way around too, only came home before dark if I were sick, wondered into the wood to play "catch me if you can", loved a girl but never had the courage to speak to her and I still wonder where she is now, fast forward a few years...finally grew up to be an Engineer.
Done most of those things, including the worm. It was required to be an official worm picker, it really was a job in the summer in central Ohio back in the 60's. I remember entertainment was something you created for yourselves.
Half the kids in my neighborhood are over 18 and still live ith their parents, all this coddeling isnt doing them any good at all.. sad to see.. bunch of big babys. sue happy little boys and girls..
From Connecticut where that is true, been in Louisiana now for almost 15 yrs where it is still pretty wild. My kids don't play video games and they're nuts about dirtbikes, skate boards, trees, guns, fireworks, swimming, trampolines, mud, trucks, etc. The schools may be better in CT but between private schools and mild winters and tough as nails kids we'll stay awhile

I spent 5 years in Louisana (Baton Rouge), traveled all over the state and met some of the nicest people ever.
