I talked to a couple in a local store one day and they were trying to decide to get either a plasma or lcd. There happened to be one of each sitting beside each other with the same program and both them and I could see no real difference in picture quality other than the man noticed that there was no glare from the overhead lights on the LCD screen.
All this was moot in that they had no high def televison feed so I told them don't waste their money just yet.
I have 37" LCD and high def signals(true high def....not upconverted stretched signals) look amazing.
u gotta remember, that when looking at tv's in bulk in stores that are running cable, how many splitters are behind those tv's??that doesnt help with picture quality, if the specs match up, then go with a review on quality, and or brand preference.
and as for the circuit city extended warranty, hows that going to play out, there going out of business
I haven't heard anything about Circuit CIty going out of business, and I have a few freinds that work in my local store (I worked there during college myself).
A lot of the bigger stores are now hooking up HD DVD players or Blu Ray players to the nicer Hi Def tvs to really show them off. If you are thinking about buying a different TV, ask an employee to hook up one of them in order to see how they look as it will be a much better feed than the store wide one.
I forgot to ask, how do you get your programming? Over the air, cable, DirectTV?
I just bought a 50" samsung plasma at Fry's for $1200. Plasma or LCD are both excellent. I went with plasma because of the deeper blacks. It's in a bright room and it's a beautiful picture. With the new technology, burn-in and life expectancy aren't an issue.
Don't get a 1080 though, it'd be a waste of money at this point. Technology is just catching up with 720 now. You also get a slightly lower quality picture with a 1080 if you're not watching 1080 stuff (bluray).

actually there past 720, there making 1080p which is full contrast hd as opposed to 1080i.
my digital cable box broadcasts 1080i,tv is 1080i, my toshiba HD dvd player, playsback 1080p,
Everyone is different... different size wallets, different size rooms, different eyes, different lighting in rooms. All are factors. The bottom line - how much can you afford, what size room, how well lit is the room, what do you like. You will make the right choice that is best for you. Do you prefer a Bronco or a _________ - you name it?
I went with a Sony Bravia 52" XBR in LCD. About $3200.00
Wow, I didn't realize so much stuff was in 1080 now. Nothing around here supports that yet.
lol, thats what i said...........this is going to play out exactly like the computer era, where you jack up a system 1 day and 2 months later, there making them twice as fast
Plasma has a short life expectency, usually around 5 years before you can expect failures to occur. LCD will last longer and still give an adequate picture inprovement over picture tube tv's. I would go with the LCD in digital HD.
Bull. I'm getting pretty sick of hearing this. My Panasonic 42 inch plasma has an MTBF of 60,000 hours. A lot more than 5 years. Averaging let's say, 6 hours per day, you'll get approximately 28 years before the MEAN time between failure.
The main difference between LCD and Plasma that I've seen is electricity use. Most compareable Plasmas use 2x the power of LCDs.
Other than that I think that plasmas have better pictures. But I've seen great and poor examples of both. Basicly buy what you like, but my preference is Plasma.
Also there are several bars around me that have the exact same TV as mine and the 37 inch models as well. They are on all the time in really smokey environments and have had no problems.

Part of your statment is very true. Technology is just coming up to 720 standard. And 1080 can be blurry outside the HD format. However, when viewing fast action or sports on 1080 HD their is no ghosting or blurring. In 720 HD their can be. 1080 is a superior picture under the those condidtions but, may not be worth the extra $$$$ if you don't see a current or future need / value.
