fluid and filter change

Hey fellas,
I've got an 06 f150 4x4 with about 70000 on it, I'm thinkin about changing the trans fluid and filter in case the guy who had it before me never did. Does any one have a rough idea of how many quarts of trans fluid I need before I run to the parts store, do you think i should stay with mercon v or would a full synthetic be better? Any difference in filters that anyone knows of? Oh yeah I would guess my torque convertor has a drain plug, does it not? Thanks in advance

Usually you need a pressurized system to change the torque converter fluids. I have never heard of a drain plug on the torque converter, doesn't mean there isn't one, I just never heard of it.

No drain plug on the TC and for future reference Mercon V is NOT a full synthetic fluid. The fluid is 53% GPIII and 47% GPII its considered semi-synthetic. This is set forth in the license agreement by Ford who issues the licenses to independent makers.

Sorry for the misinfo, they always call it synth at work, I assumed it was full synthetic.

You could check your owners manual for the proper fluid capacity and type. Also I think that the filter has a metal screen so in therory you can clean it. This is not a known fact...but my 99 had a metal screen. I could check the part number for you tomarrow when I get to the shop. I would say to stay with the Ford fluid. Also if you did not get an owners manual I will check the capacity chart on mine and post tomarrow for you. I also have an 06, I have a 5.4 in mine not sure if yours is a 4.6 or if that even makes a difference.

FORD hasnt used a metal screen since the c-4,c-6 days the truck you have has a 4r75-e trans and it does need the filter changed and it is also equipped with reusable pan gasket and reuse it and not one of those aftermarket gaskets , that will damage your pan and create a leak , pan refill requires 4 quarts the converter drain plugs were deleted around 2001 , the transmissions complete capacity such as when a rebuild is performed is 13 quarts the only way to service it correctly is with flush machine

Thanks for the input guys. I have a buddy that works at a tire/auto repair shop and they do flushes and things of that nature. Not sure of how much pull he has to get me any kind of discount, but it looks like I may go that route.

I have had a couple of Ford cars in the past that needed a trans rebuild, and on both of them I had the guy drill and tap another plug into the converter 180 degrees from the original. Then it was simply pulling one plug, turning the converter a half turn, pulling the new one, and draining it empty.I think he charged me $15 extra to do it.
