Ok I have my 69 429/460 torn down to the short block pan off etc. How can I tell weather its a 429 or 460? I do remember reading that the 460 have 2Y or something like that cast in the crank I dont see any casting numbers on it any ideas were to look? I can get cast numbers off rods if it will help they are C8 something. It does have 460 cast on the front of block backwards and inside the pan back by the rear main area the same. Im thinking its a 460 but cant find the numbers on the crank. Thanks alot I really am curious what I got here.
Ok sorry to ramble I know these C9VE-A heads are low cc high comp heads but did these engines also have factory flattop pistons. This one does.
Thanks a ton Andy
Crank casting code is on the side of the front counterweight. 2Y, 2Yxx for 460, 4U for 429. Flattop pistons are almost for certain going to make it a 429 as the 460s had dished pistons.
Thanks alot George I found the 4U so I got a 69 429 very cool. Im so happy about this find I must tell you all. Well Im about the 4th owner best I can figure. The guy I bought it from thought it was a 79 460. Well when I went to look at it I say c9ve heads a performer intake and aluminum holley valve covers so I knew it was a must have. Now I have the badboy torn down and guess what its a brand new rebuillt engine never started still assembly lube on everything etc. Only thing wrong with it is they put a brand new big crane cam in it with stock springs and bent half the pushrods when they tried to start it. So I got a new rebuilt 429, awesome heads, new performer intake, new pricy valve covers, new crane cam and lifters etc.
Now are you all ready for the price? $300 US dollars. I must have done something right this week lol. My father still says quote [yeah well you still dont know until it runs] he just doesnt appreciate the value of the parts alone. I will be reassembling this sweet find next week and pulling my 460 to put this in since it should run way better.
Just goes to show we all can get lucky sometimes. Because if I did I hope you all will to oneday.
Rock On Andy
