does anyone know what the best chip for a 98 F-150 is? And where I could get one? I'm looking for a little more power and maybe gas mileage. 5.4, auto, 3.73 gears 17" wheels with stock tires
The best chip can be defined by how much you want and what sorta support the manufacter supplies. FTE is a very good source of chips. They put out good stuff.
You might want to check out the chip forum of this site. Lots of good info there.
Have you had good luck with your chip? I have the K&N filter but I was wondering if a chip might help my fuel economy a little, any luck with yours? John
A chip will help with the power but don't get one for mileage. While its possible to pick up some extra mpg (and most people do if their driving habits stay the same after installing it), you must run premium with a chip. Figure on your fuel costs staying about the same....
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Feb-02 AT 10:00 PM (EST)]I gained at most 1 mpg. I have not had to run the premium but I do run higher octane. Also, after you install it, you'll feel it. And that feeling feels good every time you punch the gas.
Any mileage increase is a bonus but that is not the reason I purchased mine. The better shifting tranny was the best reason as well as the horsepower and torque. Elimination of the limiter was nice as well.
If you're not running premium you aren't getting all the horsepower out of the chip. Your knock sensor is simply allowing your computer to pull back the base-line timing, decreasing horse-power. Fill it with premium, yank the battery cables, turn the headlight switch to on and leave it that way for 15 minutes to reset your computer. You'll then get all the horse-power the chip supplies.....
