I received a fan from a fellow member (thanks, Dick!!), and it's a 5-bladed fan, and not symetrical - I mean the spacing is not star shaped, but erratic. I think it was off a '52.
Have you ever seen one of these? Any chance at it being better than the 4-blade that was on the flattie, when I got the truck?
I have a Hobart 140 and i'm really happy with it. Northern Tool has them for about $430, a small argon/co2 bottle will run you around $75, and you're in business. Does everything a garage builder would need to do.
The new Millermatic 140 and 180 mig welders can be used with 120V or 220V by simply using an adapter on the end of the plug. I have used the 180 with the Auto-Set function and it is the cat's *** for inexperienced welders. More expensive than the Hobart though ($1000 for the 180).
My dad went out one day looking for welders so we could fix my frame on my 51 and the guy told him that the millermatic 140 would be the best for what we wanted to use it for (basicaly just the frame on my truck and maybe some body panels) nothing over 1/8 or 3/16. The millermatic 140 says it can weld up to 3/16. Is the welder worth the extra dough??? Compared to the hobart 187 it is similar in price. Dad thinks that miller is the "cadilac" of welders cause he has used miller welders where he works now, compared to what they used to use...I think it was lincoln
Hobart is made by Miller. It's their "big box store" brand. Northern Tool always has excellent prices on Hobart and free shipping. I'm very pleased with my Hobart 140!
I'd recommend the Hobart 187. It will handle any welding you are likely to need, and the consumables are available at any welding supply.
Ditto on the 187...LOVE it!! I'll put up with the 220 volt over the 110 volt, just because it does such a better job on 220. I'd rather have a little more "ooomph" and not need it, than need it and not have it.
I didn't have 220V available when I bought the 140, but I have NOT been dissapointed with it. I would have bought the 220V model if I had had it available then tho. I have welded 3/8" with it (non safety related) by V grooving the joint and filling it with a couple passes.
Reed1951,
I bought the Miller 135 about 6-7 years ago and am very satisfied with it. Like AX said, the Hobart is made by Miller. When I researched the Miller 135 and the Hobart 140 several years ago the only difference I found was that the Miller had infinite heat and wire speed controllers. The Hobart had an infinite wire speed controller and a 5 position switch for heat selection. So, in theory, you would be able to adjust the Miller a little better, but it would take someone with a lot more experience than me to be able to take advantage of that increased capability. I don't think you can go wrong with either welder.

Good Luck!
Ditto. I bought my Millermatic 135 about the same time you did and for the same reasons.
I have the Hobart 140. Miller now owns Hobart and mine has a Miller gun with it.
I use it for everything. I use it for more than its rated. I would buy mine again.
I got it from Northern tool with free shipping a few years ago.
I have a millermatic 140. Very happy with it. Check the newspaper, craigslist.com or local pawn shops for used units. I bought mine at a local pawn shop. It appeared to be new, no wear on anything. I spent about $120 for argon tank, guages and a reel of wire. Have a great day, chuck
I have a Millermatic 130xp mig that ive had since 97 and love it. Its 110v which is nice to use anywhere. IM going to buy a millermatic 251 to replace my old hobart mig. It works but its time to buy a new one. I also have a Miller econo tig ac/dc 150 amp. I also have a Miller xtreme plasma cutter. Thats my new toy i mean tool! I guess you can say im a Miller fan.
I have a hobart 185 I like it alot. But if I had to get a new one it would be the lincon 180. It is 220 volts, leaves realy nice bead, portable, easy to carry, and easy to use. You can also get a aluminum spool gun for that welder.
