A friend of mine has a 1997 F350 that would die when at idle or at slow speeds.
The next day it would not start at all. A mechanic changed the cam sensor and still nothing so he replaced a $400 computer, and still nothing, now he says its the other computer, $822 this time. Has anyone had this problem?

None of it is making any sense!
Are you talking Gas motor or a Diesel?
Next is, he needs to get a mechanic that know what he is doing and not just spend the customers money on guessing.
If it's a gas motor, what codes are present?
thread title states "Pwerstroke" so i'm guessing he has a hd F250 with the 7.3L powerstroke diesel and that he has a horrible mechanic. try posting your thread in the Super Duty/Heavy Duty forum, you'll have more luck and interest.
