4x4 question

Why is it when the my truck is in 4x4 and I turn the wheels it feels like the front end is hopping? Turning right or left and on level ground, it doesnt matter. Hope this is normal. If so, sorry for the newb question.

What kind of surface are you driving on? If it's on a hard dry surface, that's expected of the system as you're causing it to bind.

I would suggest not driving it like that as you're gonna end up breakin' parts... Save the wheeling for off-road (ie, anything but a hard dry surface). You can use the 4x4 on asphalt/concrete if needed when heavy raining/snowing/icy conditions but otherwise, when it's dry, LEAVE IT OFF.

Cool. I've never steering locked my wheels during 4x4. Would the hopping get a lot worse if I did? Not gonna break anything eh?

I was coming off of a rocky dirt road with some steep slopes where there was minimum slippage. After I dis-engaged 4x4 hi (light off), I could still feel the bind but it was gone shortly after. I wouldnt drive it like that, it's not practical.

The binding is normal and will not hurt anything, as long as you don't make a habit of it. Turning the wheel in full lock can overheat the power steering pump, plus I'm sure you'd wear something out in the front end if you cranked it over full lock and held it there for an hour while driving in slow circles.....although I'd probably puke first.

You'd puke first. I dont think so lol

From what I know, holding the steering wheel in a full lock position for longer than 12 SECONDS is a very bad thing. Thats another habit I'm not into......but da wife!!!
