Egr problem or injectors?

2005 f250 121,000 miles

Thanks again for the help diagnosing my last problem. No boost, no power, wouldnt even shift out of first gear, couldnt get enough rpm. Pulled the EGR valve and found it was stuck open ,cleaned it and it has been perfect ever since. It did it again this morning, it showed I had 50 miles to go before empty, it felt like I was running out of fuel, pulled in and filled up. I left the gas station and got on the throttle it blew dark smoke for approx 10 seconds, hardly going untill it kicked in and went.

also when I pull up to a stop light and idle, the motor changes pitch it goes from a normal diesel deep sound to a higher pitch and louder noise diesel sound. hope that makes sense.

Do I need to replace the EGR valve, or could it be an injector issue?
Can I diagnose an injector problem or do I need to take it to the dealership?

thanks

I had the same problems. I took it to the dealer under warranty, and they replaced the ICP sensor and wire harness. It fixed all of my problems.

You need to pull the codes. Once you have that hopefully its something simple like ICP sensor or EGR which you can do yourself....

I'm voting turbo needs to be cleaned. Sounds like the veins might be sticking/stuck and the VGT is trying to get some exercise. You might take it for a good hard romp down the highway and see if that helps.
