I'm going to be buying a mid 60s to early 70s shortbed F100 soon. Anyway, regardless of what it starts with, it's going to be treated to a 460 swap that will be pushing about 500-525 hp and close to 600ft/lbs torque. My question is what factory or aftermarket trannys will bolt up and handle this kind of power. I prefer manuals, but I'll stick with an auto if I buy a truck originally equipped with one. And, my mentality is the more gears the better (to a point). If I had my wishes, I'd put a Richmond gear 6sp. manual behind the 460, but I don't know if it would handle that much torque. Any input or ideas are appreciated. Thanks.
Your best bet would be get a C-6. Have it totally and PROFESSIONALLY redone by a well known trans shop in your area and add shift improver kit. C-6's steal a little more power than some tranney's, BUT they are nearly bulletproof (meaning the don't break down easily from mass amounts of power.)
Neal,
Look at the Tremec TKO 5 speed. It's an aluminum case 5 speed
(4th is 1:1, 5th is .68:1). It shares many dimensions with the
Toploader (and other Ford transmissions) 4 speed (same speedo
gear, same trans mount, 31 spline output shaft, same bellhousing
bolt pattern). The input shaft is a bit longer (requires an
aluminum spacer between the bellhousing and trans) and uses a
1 and 1/8th inch (26 spline) clutch disk. There are companies
on the web that will sell you a brand-new trans and the parts
necessary to install it in an older car/truck.
In terms of reliability, one manufacturer of new kit Cobras
uses the TKO behind their big-block (460) cars, and one of
the performance supply houses used a TKO behind their blown,
stroked 460 Mustang. I've been running a TKO in my Torino
(mildly warm 429 w/ a 4v) for two years without any problems.
Someone else on this site has a TKO in their truck too.
Ditto on what Ohio Bill said about the Tremec 3550 TKO. I've got one in my Cobra (along with a Ford Motorsport's Crate 460-535hp). I've got lots-o-friends running the same tranny in their Cobras, and we beat the heck of them, and they just keep going...
The reasons for five and six-speed transmissions are (1) the addition of overdrive or (2) to keep an engine within it's powerband during the shift. The 460 is capable of gobs of torque over a wide rpm band, so #2 doesn't apply and #1 applies if you are doing a lot of highway driving; which doesn't sound like what you are intending.
My choice would be a wide-ratio GER or TCI C6 and a 3.50 or 3.70:1 rear axle ratio and use lower-profile tires at the strip and switch to taller ones for everyday street/highway use.
