she is a sh**-zu
Mange? Ticks? Dry air also can cause dog to scratch like crazy.
Mange = trip the the vet, ticks can be removed, but make sure you get all of it.

My Spaniel/Pit mixed male likes to "nest" in the dry autumn leaves. Every year he would get a bright red blotch in the groin area. We got a spray from our vet and after three years we finally figured out he got the blotch shortly after he started laying in the leaves each year.
There must be something in the leaves. Maybe mold?
Dry skin in the winter is the most likely. Allergies. A Flea; you wouldn't believe how many people say their dog doesn't have fleas, I can't find any fleas either, but treat them for fleas and the itch goes away. My Derm professor in Vet school drilled in us that even one flea that you never find can make a dog miserable if they are allergic to flea bites - it only takes one then.
Can't make a diagnosis over the internet though, sorry.
As others have said it could be allergies. It could also be a nervous habit caused by anxiety. My sister's cat licks its hair off the top of its back when we rearrange the furniture because it gets stressed by the unfamiliar layout.
well i looked up what mange was and just about threw up my lunch on my desk here, lol
i dont think its that, but thanks number for the heads up and what to look for, im sure about the fleas not being there, shes on frontline and i bath her in flea and tick shampoo, she has had fleas in the past just not right now.
do any of you recommend a particular shampoo? or what would you guys put on some dry skin??
My female schnauzer had the same problem. She would use the edge of the bottom stairs to scratch her back until it was bleeding. Turned out she had very dry skin. It was even more apparent in the winter. A cod liver oil supplement with her dinner fixed her of the problem.
Heat rash type of thing - lot's of dogs that don't get out much, or are either not washed much or are over-washed can get it.
This is a common problem with dogs that are kenneled a lot of the time.
Biggest problem is that once it starts, the wounds itch.
More fat in the diet is indicated, treat with oils and an anti-itch salve, but mainly get the diet corrected to the high side of needs for now, reduce the fat later.
Any leftover grease from cooking can be added to the food to help.
It is similar to exzema in human skin. I doubt I spelled that right...
If you have a farm/agriculture store near you, go in and buy a tin of " Bag Balm" which is used on the utters of a cow when they are cut or bruised. Put a little bit on the area and watch it heal within 2-3 days. The dog won't lick it, and do not cover it with a bandage. We've used it for years and it works wonders.
