Removing my a/c

I have a 1990 f-150 with a 351 and the a/c does not work. the guy before me said that it wasn't working when he had it very well either (not cold). I was just wanting to know how easy it is to just remove it completely and take the whole thing out. Since getting the system retrofitted to the new a/c fluid would be more than what it is worth for the amount I would use it. Do all of the controls and everything still work the same other than when you go to the a/c setting then would there just be nothing. I also thought it might help with less weight and better gas mileage since it can't get any worse.
Thanks any info would help.

Retrofitting the wrong way is to go to evilmart and buy the 3 can retrofit package and screw on the fittings in the package and fill it up.

Retrofitting that 1990 system is easy, R&R the accumulator, orifice tube and change the leaky spring lock fittings. Add the proper amount of Ester oil, properly install the new adapter fittings, evacuate the system and recharge to 80% of the R12's charge weight. Evacuation and charging is best done by an AC tech, many Lube & Go places do it.

Removing the entire system, is far more labor intensive and not cost effective. If you are out of freon, the compressor clutch is just freewheeling anyway not costing power.
The entire AC system weighs less than 60 lbs.

Just leave it in place. The next owner might want to fix the system.

The truck I have had non-working A/C when I got it. I understand that it didnt work for about 10 years, and didnt work for the previous owner when he got it either.

I replaced the high-pressure line between the condenser and the evaporator, the accumulator/dryer, and vacuumed and charged it.

Will freeze you good in the summer.

I'm sure that I would have passed on the truck if I had found that someone had butchered the system.
