Hard to start cold?

Posting for an older gentleman, '89 6.9L needs ether to start cold, changed new glow plugs, new glow plug control module, new injectors, rebuilt injector pump and timed. Compression 450-500 psi on six cylinders 300 on two, but they are not on the same bank. runs but smokes, still needs ether to start. Once warmed up can be shut down and restarted no problem. Can you point us in a direction for solution? Have read several of related previos threads with no resolution. Thanks Tony!

Be sure the glow plugs are getting powered, you can have the relay be bad, or some other disconnection in the system. The head gaskets usually take out the back two cylinders first, not always side by side.

89 .........6.9 is there a year or engine mistake here. The 6.9 and 7.3 engines used totally different glow plugs and controllers.....

How fast is the engine turning with the starter......must be over 200rpm

Marinepilot,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

89 should have the new style glow plug system.

Have you checked the glow plugs?
A couple burnt out glow plugs will make the new style system malfunction.

Glow plugs are correct and relay is providing proper power to glow plugs, can be started if glow plugs are cycled several times, but they shouldn't have to be!
