'70 Highboy
Just a quick question...I have a 1970, F-250 4x4 Highboy, 360, with the Dana 44 up front, Dana 60 in the rear, 4 speed, divorced t-case. Anyways, I notice when the hubs are locked and I'm in 2wd coasting I can hear a whining/metalica singing noise coming from...well, I'm not sure, but somewhere under the truck, that stops when I hit the gas, if I'm in 4wd, it doesn't do it, nor if the hubs are unlocked. Any ideas what could be causing this? Thought possibly a pinion bearing, but not real sure...
Other than that, trucks in pretty good mechanical condition. Got it for $250 with a terrible paint job, and trashed out interior (was an old ranch truck) but quickly did a rattle can job on it, primer black, has a nice brush guard on it, and off road lights, and makes a great off roading rig for running around the mountains or when it snows a lot here, and can't drive my '73 2wd.
Thanks for replies!
Could you please post pics of your trucks?

As for the noise...thats reassuring. I'd heard somewhere else that it's nothing to worry about, but was wondering. I know my friends '92 Bronco has some vibrations in 2wd with the hubs locked, so hopefully the whirring is just the equivalent. Another thing, thinking its my front U-joint though, replaced my pinion seal up front, and back, and noticed on the front driveshaft, my U-joint was missing a few bearings, maby getting a little worn but sometimes if I let off the gas quick, and hit it again, I can hear a bit of a clunk up front...
As for the pics, I guess I'll post my '70 in here, and '73 in the appropriate forum and link to it here in a bit...
Keep in mind these were just pics I had handy on my laptop, not the greatest but my camera is dead, and its snowing pretty hard, so I'll be sure to get some good "action" shots tomorrow haha...
Still hoping to fix 'er up more, think new tires will be the next upgrade, but all in all shes a great rig, nothings been able to stop her yet, deep mud, snow, whatever you throw at it.

You can build an online photo gallery for both your trucks on FTE.
Good luck with your truck and keep us posted on your work on it.
I really like these old trucks, they are a lot tougher than todays vehicles. Although one problem I have is people not understanding them, I have a friend whos a girl thats always asking how my "pieces of shi*t are doing" in somewhat of a joking way, but she really doesn't get it, I often get "does your truck even run?" and believe me...they do, this highboy is a hard truck to stop, and believe me, you can still open her up to at least 90mph (thats all I had the ***** to hit, but she had more).
I had a feeling when I saw the title of your thread that Karl would be chiming in here...if it's about a '70 Highboy, he's all over it!
I think you'll find a lot of folks who appreciate the older iron, especially when you get it fixed up a little. I've gotten positive comments at the parts store and the gas station, to name a couple. I don't currently have a girlfriend, but if I did and she called my truck a POS, she'd soon be looking for a new boyfriend! Love me, love my truck...
