Stalls while driving??? what the heck
Starts right up when cold or warm. Driving down the highway, or in town and dern thing just dies when ever it feels like. Drop it in N while still rolling and turn key, varooommm, starts right up. Run at least 8 tanks of gas through since I bought it, have 3 tanks worth of fuel additive/cleaner run through it. New fuel filter at the carb. Recent cap, rotor, wires and plugs before I bought it 2 months ago. Checked the vacuum lines, no cracked or broken lines that I can find. Runs fine, drives great, idles good.
So I am wondering if these might be the issues?
#1. I know of intermittent CPS problems in the diesels, how about this motor?
#2. Maybe intermittent alternator problem?
#3. Or ignition problem?
Why would it start right up after it dies? Starting to be a PITA. ug!

Initially: Module overheats, engine dies, re-starts almost immediately.
Next: Module overheats, engine dies, re-starts after 30 minutes or so.
Sooner or later (usually sooner), module overheats, burns out, engine will NOT re-start.
HEAT is the mortal enemy of Ford ignition modules.
Where Ford installed them, for the most part is a MAJOR factor when it fails.
If on the dizzy, the module used in the 1980's (E43Z-12A297-A / MOTORCRAFT DY-425 / marked: E3EF-12A297-A1A, or A2A) on all vehicles was a POS from day one = so bad, that Ford was forced by the Gov't to recall 5 MILLION vehicles to replace the turd several yrs ago.
From 1974 thru 1986, the square "box type" module was mounted on the left fender apron, adjacent to the left exhaust manifold. Heat radiating from the manifold melted the innards of the module usually sooner than later. When replacing this little charmer, add some washers to space it away from the apron. This allows more air to flow around it.
Ford, in 1987...finally...installed this type of module at the rear lower section of the fender apron, away from the heat of the exhaust manifold. These modules mounted in this location are the ONLY ones that have a long life...in most cases.

My module lasted from 1978 until 1992. Then I went through two quickly, until I got a factory Ford OEM. This one still works flawlessly, in stock upper fenderwell location, driver side.
My '76 also has a junk yard module after the first month I owned it. I kept a spare under the hood just in case (not knowing the truck yet), and sure enough, it went out. Sure, it would start again before long, but since I had the spare I didn't bother trying more than 3 times.
Funny though, this is the 6th ford Ive owned, never had this problem, but then again all my others were 88 and newer. The e-150 ive got had problems with the modules on top of the plugs so i replaced all of them, no problems since. This is truly the best site for information. Many thanks to all of you.
