I have a 1978 460 from a lincoln in my F100. I was driving it yesterday and it just stopped. I tried to crank it again and it turned quickly like there was no compression. After a few seconds of cranking it started acting like there was compression again and I eventually got it to fire and run. It ran smoothly for about 10 seconds then died again. While it is being cranked fuel is blowing upwards out of the carburetor sometimes.
I have good spark, and compression measures above 110 on all cylinders except one which measures about 90. Please help, I am out of ideas.
Sounds crazy but a timing chain or gear problem could cause your intake valve(s) to open during the compression stroke and push air back up the carb. Even a valve that's sticking open because of a mechanical problem or something lodged on the seat could do that, but I don't think a problem with only one valve would prevent your engine from starting at all. Anyway, that's one dude's guess!
sounds to me like your carb might be flooding. could have dirt in the needle and seat or a sinking float.
Could have also jumped time, although they usually do this when you shut off the motor, and the inertia in the camshaft keeps it turning long enough to skip a tooth or 2.
Ditto the timing chain jump. Notice I said jump because it does not usually break. Distributor still turns but it is wrong. Take out #1 spark plug. Hand crank the engine until the piston is TDC compression. Look at where the rotor is pointed in the distributor. If not at #1, jumped chain.
