I need to know what I can do to improve milage (just got back fromWF, Tx), got probably 15 mpg on the trip at 80 mph on down. seems to have lost some milage since last summer. tried to get an oil change to synthetic but dealer there didn't have full synthetic and I didnt have time to wait for him to outsource.
Anyhow I know guys talk about programers and just chips but in reality what can be expected? I see the big g advertised (a chip) for $200 or so and a complete set up for around $600. I know many here prefer an sct but what in reality is the way to go. I have a 25ft TT to pull once in a while, use the truck for travel and some light cargo so do not want a hot rod (my BIL has the accelerator and it runs well but his milage also sucks) but from what I have read big HP from programers chips lead to big problems. Just looking to have a nice reliable truck with maybe a little better MPG.
Have only installed a Gibson turbo back exhaust, am thinking of the inlet neck but need to know if I should stay witht the 03-04 or go for the later 05-07. The OEM airfilter even in comparisons does well and one of the mags says not to change unless pushing aftermarket mods, the OEM will remain.
I'd say if you were running 80mph and got 15mpg your doing great! Really most people only get 15 when they run 70-75. Also if you got a winter blend of fuel your mileage will suffer. SCT is the way to go from Spartan. Lot's of post to read regarding the subject and mileage gains. Good luck
Speed makes a LOT of difference in fuel economy. I have found when I go over 70 that my mileage really drops off. Also the area you are from might have just switched over to the ultra low sulfur fuel which does hurt mileage. I noticed better fuel mileage towing this winter when I found some low sulfur fuel on a trip to Florida.
I was getting 16.5 doing 80-90 on a trip to & from Utah, on the way up (650 miles) my SnugTop was loaded and completely packed with moving boxes, etc.The only thing I did was start using a cetane boost and diesel concentrate from AMSOIL. Your ld should have the Motorcraft cetane boost/ conditioner as well. Before I started using it I was getting about 14 around town, now I'm getting a little better then 15. Try it out for a couple of tanks, each truck will get different results.
Rob & Big red, I get about the same at 70 as I do at 80! last summer on a trip to Colorado Springs we were driving 70-75 getting around 16-17, wife said to try 80 as we were driving slow and the milage actually improved. A lot of the recent trip was to North Tx from AZ, my milage did improve from El Paso to Tx from what I got from abiline to Elpaso. Used Flying J only so dont know if they have different fuel. I was battling headwinds from WF to El paso. But like I said I have read many on improvements but dont know if programers are all that much more than the chips they advertise. There is so much hype out there that I just really cant tell. I know that DW or DP did an article where they added a chip only and got an improvement of 1-2 mpg. along with syn oils and lubes. I think they added an intake and a catback too.
