Auto Transmission Problems
Specifics:
04, CC, 5.4, 2WD, 98k miles, not towing, no mechanical mods, trans fluid of unknown age/mileage but is still pretty in pink.
Got the truck at 94K been learning to drive with a light foot to keep the gas mileage at 15 per. Usually, truck will upshift to OD around 60 MPH and stay in OD through normal crusing speed of 70 - 75 MPH unless I have to step on it for some reason. Now, when doing 60 MPH or faster, any pressure on the peddle causes a down shift and that is the only way to get to 70 MPH (in drive) - release peddle pressure at 70 it will go back to OD. As soon as the truck starts to slow and peddle is applied to maintain the 70 MPH, it downshifts again. The problem started during the recent rain we had here in GA (a rare event in the "drought state") and the truck was not used during the cold snap last week, so always 50 DEG F + during the problem.
Any ideas? Searching gave me a million unrelated hits.
Driving today it appears that it does not go into OD at all, just shifts to neutral (RPM about 1.9k) when she gets up to 70 MPH. Putting the into OD off mode keeps it at the higher RPM at 70 MPH.
Then after a while it did start the OD OFF lamp flashing. The code reader that I have does not read anything and the light goes off when you shut the engine off and then restart it.
I guess that it is time to take it to a transmission guy.
BTW: I hear you about changing the fluid. I have a 98 Crown Vic that gets it changed (Drop pan, drain the TC and flush out the radiator) every 30k to avoid the Torque Converter Shutter of Death. Car has 225k (knock wood) on the original tranny & engine (part of the reason I got my F250 SD).
